Trump Expected to Receive Personal Letter from N. Korean Leader

Vladimir Putin

"I think, we will have a very positive result in one meeting", the president said.

Trump made the announcement on Friday after welcoming Kim Jong-un's right-hand man, Kim Yong-chol, to the White House to talk about Washington's demands of de-nuclearisation in the Korean peninsula.

He wants North Korea to "denuclearise", meaning to get rid of its nuclear arms, in return for relief from economic sanctions but the leadership in Pyongyang is believed to regard nuclear weapons as crucial to its survival and has rejected unilaterally disarming.

Trump was meeting in the Oval Office with Kim's envoy, Kim Yong Chol, a former spy chief and now the country's top nuclear negotiator.

After the meeting, which lasted more than an hour, Trump walked Kim out of the White House and they continued to speak and posed for a photo before Kim got into a black SUV and departed.

The president reiterated that he had no plans to sign anything on June 12, but added that he looked forward to lifting economic sanctions now imposed on North Korea.

What did Trump say today?

Russia's Foreign Ministry says that Lavrov spoke to Pompeo by phone on Wednesday, the first day of the American's talks with Kim Yong Chol, North Korea's former military intelligence chief.

Trump pledged to keep sanctions on North Korea until it ends its nuclear program.

His comments will stoke fears that the tempestuous relationship between Mr Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un could yet spiral into World War 3.

Nevertheless, the U.S. president had warm words for Pyongyang, saying the long discussions had touched on North Korea's denuclearisation and economic development.

An aide to Kim Jong Un has arrived at the White House, becoming the highest-ranking North Korean official to visit in 18 years.

Early Thursday, Trump told reporters "we are doing very well" with North Korea. On both of his trips to Pyongyang, Pompeo held talks with the North Korean leader.

But then, just minutes later, Trump admitted he hasn't even opened the letter, let alone read it.

He said it should not have been left to him to fix the North Korean problem, after the United States failed to correctly deal with Kim's grandfather Kim Il Sung and father Kim Jong Il.

Despite Trump's ongoing and freakish behavior when it comes to diplomacy with North Korea, anti-war voices and experts on the Korean peninsula voiced support for the announcement that the talks appeared to be back on track.

While Trump said he hadn't opened the letter, he described it as "very nice".

Former four-star general and chairman of the Institute for the Study of War Jack Keane told Fox News that Trump would not engage in game-playing with his North Korean counterpart over their Singapore summit.

North Korea's flurry of diplomatic activity following an increase in nuclear weapons and missile tests in 2017 suggests that Kim is eager for sanctions relief to build his economy and for the worldwide legitimacy a summit with Trump would provide.

Kim's right hand man General Kim Yong Chol flew into NY on Wednesday to discuss preparations for the assembly. The agency quoted Kim as saying that the North's willingness for the "denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula still remains unchanged" but also that the process should be "stage-by-stage basis by founding a solution to meet the interests of each other".

In Pyongyang, Kim Jong Un welcomed visiting Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in the first meeting between a Russian official and Kim as head of state. But he has since put it back on track following a conciliatory statement from the regime.
