Why would Microsoft want GitHub? Developers, developers, developers ― and the cloud

Microsoft reportedly in talks to acquire GitHub

However, three years later, that valuation may have ballooned, and the acquisition could set Microsoft back as much as $5 billion, according to an estimate from CNBC.

GitHub raised $250 million in 2015 and was last valued at $2 billion.

In August, GitHub announced that it was looking for a CEO to replace Chris Wanstrath, one of the company's co-founders. Github gave smaller, growing companies a way to implement some of the best practices in place at tech conglomerates while finding and contributing to the open-source projects that changed the way software was developed.

The interest that the tech giant Microsoft has for GitHub is not new since throughout these years there have been many rumours about conversations about a purchase agreement.

Now even the big companies of our day, including Microsoft, use Github as an important tool in their software development processes.

Business Insider has reported information from sources familiar with the companies involved that executives from Microsoft have been holding talks with GitHub officials in regard to potential acquisition.

On the other hand, GitHub is one of the most used tools by the developers all over the world. GitHub was attracted to a deal with Microsoft in part because of Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, the report noted.

So by that measure, this deal will be the real test of Microsoft's newfound love for open-source software and multiplatform development. It's also worth mentioning that this isn't the first time Microsoft approached the coding company with an intention to buy it. The actual terms of the deal remain unknown. More than 75 percent of respondents think the acquisition is a bad move, and the likes of Google and Disney have been suggested as more suitable buyers.
