Rain cuts short Nadal fightback, Muguruza crushes Sharapova

Richard Gasquet 'Nadal has a different game his intensity is monstrous'

The victor of the match will play either third seed Marin Cilic or Schwartzman's compatriot Juan Martin del Potro. Both matches will have to be completed on Thursday and it will be interesting to see who will find the better momentum after such a long break, especially in the match between Nadal and Schwartzman where the Argentinian won the opening set, ending Nadal's streak of 37 consecutive sets won in Paris.

Play at the French Open has been called off for the day because of rain.

Four years after a 20-year-old Garbine Muguruza let her mind run off with a win before her body had accomplished it, and lost a quarterfinal to Maria Sharapova by 1-6, 7-5, 6-1, Muguruza brought a 24-year-old mind to another quarter-final and blasted Sharapova to smithereens by 6-2, 6-1, in 70 deeply serious minutes.

World number one Nadal lost his first set at Roland Garros in three years, and when bad weather first interrupted the match the 10-time champion was in serious trouble with Schwartzman up a break in the second.

Nadal quickly wrapped up the final two points needed to secure the second set and level the match before the world No 1 maintained his ascendancy during the third set with two breaks of serve to move ahead in the match, after saving four break points when he served out.

The Spaniard looked to be just a couple of points away from taking the second set when play was halted for the last time, however, serving with a 5-3 and 30-15 lead.

Kasatkina will face US Open victor Sloane Stephens for a place in the semifinals.

"To have had the victories that I have had, to have the results that I have, obviously moving a step in the right direction", said the five-time Grand Slam champion who had made the last-eight in Madrid and semis in Rome in the run-up to Paris.
