U.S. Allies Rebuke Trump Administration's Trade Actions At G7 Meeting

Canada's Justin Trudeau says NAFTA talks broke down after Pence made ultimatum

We need to talk about aluminum: Days after the USA imposed new tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, aluminum manufacturers from G7 countries will meet with Trade Minister Jean-Francois Champagne and Quebec Minister of Economy Dominique Anglade to discuss sector and challenges on Monday in Montreal.

"The Trump administration announced on Thursday that it will impose steel and aluminum tariffs on the EU, Mexico and Canada after a temporary exemption expired on 1 June".

US President Donald Trump suggested Friday the United States might pursue separate free trade agreements with Canada and Mexico to replace the 24-year-old three-nation NAFTA pact.

Trudeau said Sunday in a US television interview the USA was seeking two main things in Nafta negotiations, which are essentially on the back-burner after the US hit Canada and Mexico with steel and aluminum tariffs last week.

Trump has infuriated Canada and European Union members of the G7 by imposing tariffs on steel and aluminum and pulling out of a deal to monitor Iran's nuclear activities. "They must open their markets and take down their trade barriers!" he wrote.

But the president defended his actions saying the USA would soon be in a stronger position with its top trading partners.

In order to persuade Donald Trump to eventually drop his punishing steel and aluminum tariffs and finally agree to a renegotiated NAFTA, Canada's strategy is to somehow engineer a way for the USA president to claim a political victory by doing just that. "And on top of that, these tariffs are going to be hurting American workers and Canadian workers".

The EU also plans to slap heavy tariffs on other products such as bourbon, USA denim, motorcycles, motor boats etc. Trump has regularly criticized Canada's system, including last week.

The U.S. Treasury chief said he has already relayed some of the G7 comments to Trump and added that the U.S. president would address trade issues with other G7 leaders, but declined to speculate on any outcomes.

Trudeau responded on Thursday by calling the tariffs an affront to the longstanding security partnership between Canada and the United States, and Canada announced retaliatory steps.

All progress made so far in talks between with the US over trade will be for nothing if President Donald Trump carries out his threat to impose tariffs, China said Sunday. US President Donald Trump on Monday asserted an "absolute right" to pardon himself, once again lashing out at a probe into possible collusion with Russian election meddling and obstruction of justice. Ryan has said Nafta's biggest problem "comes from the north".

The Liberal government is also expected to face many protests over Trans Mountain, following the outrage that has greeted its pipeline plan so far. The average US tariff is now one of the lowest in the world: 1.6 per cent, the same as the European Union's, the Pew Research Center reports.

Counting trade in both goods and services, the U.S. trade deficit was $566 billion in 2017, a 12 percent increase marking its highest level since the 2008 Great Recession.

Heather Conley, a former U.S. State Department official now with the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, said the divisions on trade meant it would be hard for leaders to focus on the other issues. Macron pledged the riposte would be "firm" and "proportionate" and in line with World Trade Organization rules.

More broadly, economists say trade restrictions make the economy less efficient.
