Thiem and Nadal win in straight sets to reach French Open final

Moya admits that nerves accounted for Nadal losing the opening set against Diego Schwartzman in the quarter-finals on Wednesday - before rain suspended play until the following day - as well as the tight opening set the world No. 1 contested against Juan Martin del Potro in Friday's semis.

But the Spaniard was impressive on Friday, finishing with 35 winners and 19 unforced errors to Del Potro's analysis of 20 and 32.

Nadal emerged victorious in straight sets, including a memorable second in which he dropped just the one game.

He buckled at 5-5 though and sent a backhand long on break point, leaving Del Potro to serve for the match, which he did easily as Cilic sent three more backhands out.

Nadal raced away with 14 of the last 17 games.

How much prize money can each player earn at Roland Garros?

The second-set tiebreaker turned out to be critical and, although the 24-year-old botched a straightforward backhand volley with a 6-4 lead that would have won him the set, he did well to shrug that off and finally closed out the set on his fifth set point.

During the changeover after the set, a trainer came out to tape both of left-handed Nadal's wrists. As odd as it seems, Thiem played one match against Thomas Muster, who won the title here in 1995 when in his pomp. "He's a player with big power". Faltering even slightly "is not something that is happening very often with him, but the way he's been playing the last three sets yesterday and the last two sets today, is gonna help his confidence". But I know how to play against him. Perhaps. But he has not won a grand slam since he beat Andy Murray here two years ago.

Nadal is now 85-2 for his career at Roland Garros, with a record 10 championships. "Best of five is also different story".

"He's a big favourite against everybody".

"If I want to beat him, I have to play that way like I did in Rome and in Madrid".

Dominic Thiem celebrates his semifinal victory over Marco Cecchinato at the French Open on June 8.

Thiem, one of the most consistent performers on clay court over the last three seasons, conceded he is under a lot of pressure ahead of his first Grand Slam final, in which he will face the 10-time champion and Rafael Nadal.

Cecchinato knocked out seeds Pablo Carreno Busta and David Goffin before an incredible victory against 2016 champion Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals.

Thiem "plays very heavy topspin, very aggressive, goes for the shots, [has] fitness, condition", Moya said. It was the last ATP match of his second career [returning after a freak roadside accident in Miami in 1989].

The first two sets saw the two players going neck to neck and playing excellent serves to gain valuable points.

"It was not a very nice feeling", Thiem told the Court Philippe Chatrier crowd afterward.

While Nadal was untouchable past year, he's been pushed to tiebreakers by Simone Bolelli and Maximilian Marterer.

The No. 7-seeded Thiem beat Cecchinato 7-5, 7-6 (10), 6-1 in the semifinals Friday. Then Thiem got to 10-all with a drop shot of his own. After a harrowing first two sets, Thiem needed only 21 minutes to win the clinching set.

"That was definitely the key to the match", Cecchinato said.
