Whittaker Makes the Mark; Romero Does Not

Yoel Romero Daniel Cormier

Robert Whittaker and Yoel Romero tangle during their previous bout in Las Vegas last July.

He was scheduled to fight for the UFC Middleweight title on Saturday against Robert Whittaker.

Romero was given an hour to lose the weight he needed but failed to make it for the UFC 225 event tomorrow. Whittaker's belt will not be on the line and Romero was fined for coming in at 185.2 pounds his second chance on the scale.

Romero dropped Whittaker a second time with a left hand in the fifth - but again, he survived.

It was a violent continuation of their 2017 clash that saw Whittaker come away as the UFC middleweight champion. From the casual observer drawn in by the big name to the purist attracted to great tactical fights to the action-seeker wanting fireworks from the opening bell, the UFC has its fan base covered. Late in the round, Whittaker landed a jab that nearly instantly closed Romero's right eye, but he fought on to the horn.

Whittaker, of Australia, survived the third, despite an onslaught of offense from Romero. The main event is positioned on top of arguably the most exciting card of action the UFC have put together this year. Now that he is on the sidelines working more and more with FOX Sports, the former UFC middleweight champion remains that way.

All of that marred one of the best fights of the year, a scintillating five-round bout that started off slowly and finished with blood and frenzy.

The co-main event features Rafael Dos Anjos taking on Colby Covington for the interim welterweight strap. All three judges scored the fight for Tuivasa via identical 29-28 scores. Holly Holm (12-4), former bantamweight champ, was impressive with her pound and ground game beating Megan Anderson (8-3) in a unanimous decision. That includes moments with former WWE superstar CM Punk, who tackles Mike Jackson from inside the United Center in Chicago.

The two fighters were introduced and faced off at the ceremonial weigh-ins later Friday.
