Donald Trump, Kim Jong-un to open historic summit with one-on-one powwow

The motorcade carrying North Korean leader Kim Jong Un arrives at the St. Regis hotel

At a joint news conference shortly after their meeting, Bush praised his South Korean counterpart's approach to reconciliation on the Korean peninsula.

They discussed Singapore-North Korea relations and developments on the Korean peninsula amidst Kim thanking the Singaporean premier for hosting the summit. Interpreters translated Bush's casual reference to "this man" literally (이 사람).

What would be a successful or unsuccessful summit depends on who's asked.

North Korean state media have finally broken their silence on the upcoming summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and U.S. President Donald Trump. For the North Korean leader to be willing to agree to the USA president's conditions on denuclearisation, there need to be inducements and assurances offered to Pyongyang.

But the two leaders also share some parallels.

Trump canceled the meeting, but chose to move ahead with it a week later after a visit to Washington by a top North Korean official. Here's more on the challenges the interpreters could face.

There's just no recent precedent for the gamble Kim Jong Un is taking.

The short answer is nobody knows for sure.

"We have had substantive and detailed meetings to date, including this morning with the North Koreans", he said. The Canadian, Michael Spavor, ended up serving as the pair's personal interpreter.

The summit between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un will be among the most improbable diplomatic encounters in history, featuring principals who could not be more different - but who also share some surprising similarities.

Spavor did not return TIME's request for comment on the trip.

At the Quebec meeting of the leaders of seven industrial powers, Trump yanked the US endorsement of a joint economic agreement among the seven countries.

Victor Cha, top North Korea expert in the George W. Bush administration who Trump considered for South Korea ambassador, said a worst-case scenario would be that Trump puts everything on the table, prompting Kim to either balk - leading to Trump giving up - or make a vague proclamation of denuclearizing - leading to Trump declaring victory.

Ponsei University's John Delury told Singapore broadcaster AsiaNews that Trump was a disruptive force in traditional diplomacy but his tactics of a one-on-one meeting could work.

Images from the G7 summit on June 8 and 9, suggest that's not quite the case. Why only potentially? That's because these two world leaders are not, strictly speaking, known to be very diplomatic - that is to say that they are in no manner of speaking, known to be very diplomatic at all. "We're not going to go in and sign something on June 12, and we never were". It was not long ago, after all, that Kim was calling Trump a "dotard", and Trump referred to the North Korean leader as a "fat toad".

DPRK stands for the North's formal name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

"Because of difficulties finding a job these days, I have lost much interest in those things".

Kim Yo Jong, leader Kim's younger sister, was also spotted in his delegation. He could be seen speeding through Singapore on Sunday in a black limousine adorned with large North Korean flags.

Trump and Kim touched down on a sweltering early summer day in Singapore, the city-state founded in the early 19th Century as a British colony because of its position at the intersection of sea lanes between Europe and Asia. On Tuesday, both leaders will converge on Sentosa Island for their historic summit.
