Trump plans to meet Kim alone at summit start

Fake Kim otherwise known as Howard the impersonator during the Winter Olympics in South Korea

The talks come after a year of surging tensions between the two nuclear-armed rivals that saw Kim ramp up the development of his weapons programs as the two leaders traded a series of pointed personal barbs - as well as threats of war - at one another.

During that same impromptu news conference at the G7, Trump said he felt optimistic about his meeting with Kim, which will be the first between a sitting United States president and North Korean leader. The official was not authorized to speak publicly about internal deliberations and insisted on anonymity.

"When I woke up this morning I saw the news in the newspaper that our respected Marshal went to Singapore for the North Korea-U.S. summit", said Han Il Gwang, a Pyongyang resident, displaying typical discretion when speaking to an Associated Press Television crew.

Even after touching down in Singapore, it was clear that the trade disputes with U.S. allies in Quebec continued to rankle Trump.

Trump said "we've got a very interesting meeting in particular tomorrow, and I think things can work out very nicely".

The mercurial USA leader has whipsawed on expectations for the meeting, signalling that it could be the beginning of a "process" of several meetings, only to call it a "one-time shot" for peace as he embarked for Singapore.

Trump arrived on Air Force One at Singapore's Paya Lebar Air Base at 8:21 p.m. local time, where he was greeted by Singapore's Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan.

Mr Lee also said it was "not easy" to find a location in the world that is suitable to host such a high-level meeting.

But Pyongyang is demanding as yet unspecified security guarantees and the end of what it calls a "hostile policy" towards it, and has not made clear what concessions it is offering over the nuclear arsenal it calls its "treasured sword" to defend against a United States invasion.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Sung Kim, the USA ambassador to the Philippines who has taken the lead on policy negotiations with the North, will hold a "working group" with a North Korean delegation to discuss final preparations for the meeting.

Washington is demanding the "complete, verifiable and irreversible" denuclearization of the North, while Pyongyang has so far only made public pledges of its commitment to the denuclearization of the peninsula - a term open to various interpretations - while seeking security assurances in return.

Back in Pyongyang, North Korea's de facto No. 2 Choe Ryong-hae is reportedly filling in for Kim in his absence.

The summit would discuss "building a permanent and durable peacekeeping mechanism on the Korean Peninsula, the issue of realising denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula" and other issues "as required by the changed era".

Kim smiled broadly in the meeting Sunday evening.

Officials remain uncertain what will come out of Tuesday's unprecedented summit, the first of its kind between a sitting USA president and the leader of North Korea. He has not left his country since taking office in 2011 other than to visit China and the South Korean side of the Demilitarised Zone on the border.
