Five things to watch for in Trump-Kim summit

Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un "wants to go onto a new path" by meeting with US President Donald Trump. Pyongyang is demanding as yet unspecified security guarantees and the end of what it calls a "hostile policy" towards it, and has not made clear what concessions it is offering over the nuclear arsenal it calls its "treasured sword" to defend against a USA invasion.

There will not be a repeat of "flimsy agreements" made between previous U.S. administrations and North Korea, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told reporters in Singapore on Monday.

Pompeo did say the United States is "prepared to take what will be security assurances that are different, unique that America has been willing to provide previously".

That was an apparent nod to North Korea's sensitivities about the fate of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, who gave up his fledging nuclear program in exchange for economic incentives from the United States only to be ousted and killed by a mob years later.

"When I woke up this morning I saw the news in the newspaper that our respected Marshal went to Singapore for the North Korea-U.S. summit", said Han Il Gwang, a Pyongyang resident, displaying typical discretion when speaking to an Associated Press Television crew.

The South Korean government said in a statement that Moon offered his assessment of Kim and wished the US president an early happy birthday.

Pompeo spoke as top officials from the two countries continued negotiations in Singapore ahead of the meeting between Trump and Kim.

Mr Trump has forecast a "nice" outcome to the talks, while Mr Kim spent the day out of view.

"It's hospitality that we would have offered them, and as Chairman Kim said yesterday, he would have liked to have come to Singapore anyway, with or without the summit", Balakrishnan said in a interview. Trump plans to brief reporters following the summit's conclusion, and will leave for the U.S. around 8pm local time (midnight NZT).

Pompeo declined to comment on a question about the some 28,500 US servicemembers based in South Korea.

The summit - the first ever between a sitting American president and North Korea's leader - would have seen the two leaders greeting each other, before a one-on-one meeting which a U.S. official said could last up to two hours, with only translators joining them.

"If diplomacy does not move in the right direction.those measures will increase", he said. Laboriously negotiated past nuclear deals, considered breakthroughs at the time, broke down on North Korea's extreme sensitivity to allowing in outsiders to look at whether they're dismantling their nuclear facilities, many of which are thought to be hidden.

If things fall apart, it could be because "Trump presents Kim with a hard-and-fast binary choice: relinquish nuclear weapons and live in peace and prosperity, or cling to them and risk the impoverishment of your people and the safety of your regime", Haas said.

The one-on-one meeting was held for approximately 48 minutes.

Pompeo says that USA sanctions on the North will remain in place until the North denuclearizes.

Lobster bisque, beef tenderloin and ice cream were on the lunch menu, and there was also an early birthday cake for Mr Trump, who turns 72 on Thursday.

The spokesman said that North Korea should deal with Trump with "awareness" because of the end of its deal, also negotiated with China, Russia and USA allies in Europe.
