UK: May Avoids Defeat After Offering Rebels Concession On 'No Deal' Brexit

She told Today: "What was agreed was the Prime Minister understood that Parliament wants to have a real say, in all circumstances, in relation to what's going to happen in the Brexit deal". The strained parliament session underlined deep divisions over Britain's European Union exit. "There could be a confidence motion [in the prime minister] or an early general election".

While Conservatives at Westminster say some of these must come to Parliament to allow for common frameworks to be established in areas such as agriculture and environmental regulations, ministers at Holyrood fear the powers of the Scottish Parliament could be restrained for up to seven years.

Lawmakers were told to back that amendment rather than one on the EEA, an order some pro-EU Labour politicians said they would defy.

"Now it's Labour's turn to show its dysfunction", said one Labour lawmaker.

More and more people - Leavers and Remainers - from every region, every political party and every walk of life, are demanding a People's Vote on the final Brexit deal before we leave the EU.

The fresh round of trouble emerged after Downing Street published on Thursday an amended version of the meaningful vote clause which will be presented next week to the House of Lords before returning for a final vote in the Commons several days later.

After being pressed by the presenter again, Ms Smith said: "To be honest Nick it is not my job to give you the evidence on that".

But she also set ground rules, saying she would not allow parliament to tie her hands in the Brexit negotiations in Brussels or allow lawmakers to overturn "the will of the British people" - conditions that limit the powers she can hand over.

In particular, MPs voted 324 votes to 298 to reject a Lords amendment which would have strengthened parliament's statutory "meaningful vote" on the final deal between the United Kingdom and the EU.

But in apparent defiance of the deal the rebels believed they had struck with May, a spokesperson for the DExEU said: "On the meaningful vote we have agreed to look for a compromise when this goes back to the Lords".

The prime minister had faced the prospect of a losing a vote after rebels had indicated their support for a change introduced by the House of Lords to require ministers to report what efforts they had made to secure a customs union.

On Tuesday the battle for control came to a head, as lawmakers geared up to vote on whether to provide a "meaningful vote" to Parliament, something that could pave the way for a second referendum.

Shortly before 1.30pm on Tuesday, David Davis, the Brexit Secretary, opposed a House of Lords amendment in no uncertain terms. Should lawmakers prevail, the direction of Brexit could change.

But the resignation by Phillip Lee, who has always been critical of the government's Brexit strategy, underlined the deep rifts in the party over Brexit that makes such votes anything but easy.

Theresa May's government defeats Brexit amendments which sought to keep Britain in the single market and stay in a customs union with the European Union.

The customs amendment would have forced May's government to take steps to keep Britain in a customs union with the European Union after Brexit.

After a spokesman for Mrs May sowed confusion over what potential rebels had been offered, the prime minister was hit by calls from pro-EU Conservatives not to backtrack on her promises. But she managed to avert defeat, by brokering a last minute deal that staved off a rebellion from within her own Conservative party.
