5 immigrants killed, several injured after SUV fleeing Border Patrol crashes

U.S. Border Patrol agents take into custody a father and son from Honduras near the U.S.-Mexico border

In total, 12 people were ejected from the SUV when it rolled over during the pursuit. The agent was able to stop one of the vehicle and called out a description of the other two.

The Trump administration has said tougher immigration policies are needed to deter immigrants from entering America illegally.

Dimmit County Sheriff Marion Boyd told KSAT that the chase reached speeds of about 100 miles per hour.

The sport utility vehicle skidded off the road and then attempted to get back onto the highway, but the driver overcorrected and the vehicle flipped over, ejecting several people, Boyd said.

Video of the scene by the local television station KSAT-12 showed the large, black vehicle was severely damaged, blocking both lanes of the rural stretch of highway.

Meanwhile, the US Customs and Border Patrol Agency issued a statement expressing "deepest sympathies" to the families of those who died in the crash.

'We've seen this many, many times, in not only this county but other counties along the border, ' Boyd said. This includes the driver, who is believed to be a United States citizen. Dimmit County is directly north of Webb County and east of Maverick County, which border Mexico.

Most of these chases are related to drug or human smuggling, Boyd added. In 2015, an SUV packed with immigrants crashed during a pursuit, killing six passengers. "This is, I think, a flawless example of why our borders need to be secure".

5 immigrants killed in rollover crash in Dimmit, Texas.

"It's just extremely busy, we need the assets down here, we have a problem", Boyd said.
