France star Kante thankful for technology after win over Socceroos

Bert van Marwijk Socceroos

Both VAR and goal-line technology came to the fore as France beat Australia 2-1 in the first Group C match of the World Cup in Russian Federation on Saturday.

After a disjointed first half, the game sparked into life shortly after the interval as referee Andres Cunha awarded a penalty to France after consulting VAR and deciding that Josh Risdon had clipped Antoine Griezmann just inside the area.

Uruguayan official Cunha initially played on following Risdon's challenge on Griezmann before pointing to the penalty spot after consulting VAR and viewing a screen next to the dugouts.

Socceroos skipper Mile Jedinak sent his French counterpart Hugo Lloris the wrong way from the spot to give Australia hope of forcing a draw at the Kazan Arena only for Pogba to grab the victor in the 81st minute.

"It's a good job there was video in this case", Griezmann told beIN Sport TV.

Griezmann stepped up to take the penalty, and blasted the ball to the left of goalkeeper, Mathew Ryan, giving France a valuable lead, but it was not to last for long. Just after I got up, it was hurting a bit.

A video-review system meant to correct referee errors served only to deliver more contention as technology played a decisive role in France's 2-1 win over Australia at the World Cup yesterday.

France's talent will be enough to get them through their group and may even carry them to the quarter-finals, but their lack of cohesion is a big problem and one that may be hard to resolve before the end of the tournament.

"But there was no whistle so I thought about other things".

"I made a different choice: he was disappointed too". I think there were a lot of moments they didn't know what to do anymore.

Deschamps started with a three-man attack comprising of Ousmane Dembele, Kylian Mbappe and Griezmann with Pogba and Corentin Tolisso operating on either side of N'Golo Kante in the midfield.

For his manager at club level, Mourinho, the victor was an own goal.

"People are using extreme words to say how bad this performance was, but it is not so bad to win your first match at the World Cup".

The star striker went down easily and despite officials waving the penalty it was ultimately awarded by the VAR. The type of game that we expected.

Teenager Daniel Arzani came on for Robbie Kruse as Australia chased another equaliser, but they were unable to conjure another goal as France held firm for five minutes of added time. Fox Sports football reporter Daniel Garb said there were only so many "gallant defeats" we can take before something needs to give.

Youngster Daniel Arzani made his world cup debut and showed off his pace in a final flurry, but the minnows again struggled in the offensive third.
