Strong quakes hit Japan, killing at least 2, and Guatemala

Passengers faced suspended services at Nijyo station in Kyoto due to the quake

It set off multiple building fires and toppled walls.

Kansai Electric Power said no irregularities had been detected at the Mihama, Takahama and Ohi nuclear plants after the quake.

Japan's weather agency warned people in western Japan to be prepared for another big quake in the next few days.

Three people were confirmed dead, including a nine-year-old girl, who was reported to have died after a school wall fell on her.

The JMA also said it is unlikely that another fault zone responsible for the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake that leveled the port city of Kobe had any influence on the June 18 quake based on the distance between the two points.

An elevator operator said there were at least 70 cases of people being temporarily trapped inside elevators in Osaka Prefecture and nearby areas, while the police said a water pipe on a road in Takatsuki burst and flooded the area. Japanese authorities don't confirm death until after an examination at a hospital.

The magnitude 6.1 natural disaster struck the city of Osaka and the surrounding area Monday about 8 a.m.

The strongest shaking was north of Osaka, the agency said.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has updated the magnitude of the quake to 6.1, stronger than the initial 5.9 magnitude. There are reports of scattered damage including broken glass and concrete.

The Japan Meteorological Agency warned residents of Osaka and surrounding prefectures June 18 to brace for strong aftershocks over the coming week following the magnitude-6.1 natural disaster that rocked the region around the morning commute.

The morning commute was disrupted as train and subway service in the Osaka area including the bullet train were suspended to check for damage to equipment.

The quake struck in one of Japan's main manufacturing heartlands, home to companies including Panasonic, Nintendo and Keyence Corp.

Automakers Honda Motor Co., Mitsubishi Motors Corp. and Toyota Motor Corp. unit Daihatsu all stopped production at plants in the region.

A major quake has always been feared in the area, which is located near several major faults.

Japanese Self-Defense Force fighter jets and helicopters are heading to the area to gather information.
