Homeland Security chief slams 'irresponsible' reports of separating migrant families

Democrats, activists rally against Trump's family separation policy

Outcry has come from Democratic and Republican lawmakers as well as the United Nations and religious leaders.

It wasn't long before other leading Democrats joined Harris in condemning Nielsen for her role in this inhumane practice of separating children from their families, including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-California) and Sen.

Harris has previously criticized the separation of undocumented children from their parents, calling it "human rights abuse" - and has frequently and famously butted heads with Nielsen and her predecessor John Kelly. DHS has said they still have that right, but that process must happen while they are in detention, as the department prosecutes them for entering illegally.

Trump, in a string of Twitter comments, decried Europe's problems with mass immigration and vowed to control the flow of migrants into the United States. We operate according to some of the highest standards in the country.

"It is the Democrats fault for being weak and ineffective with Boarder Security and Crime".

The furor erupted after Sessions announced in May that the administration would start criminally prosecuting anyone caught entering the US illegally, including people who want to apply for legal asylum but do not present themselves at a legal port of entry.

Sen. Susan Collins, a moderate Republican from ME, said the policy is "inconsistent with our American values," adding that "we need to fix our immigration laws, but using children is not the answer".

Nielsen echoed these points during her prepared remarks. The beginning of the unraveling of a democracy she said, is when the body that makes the laws, instead of changing the law, instead tells the enforcement body not to enforce the law. "That can not be the answer".

"If you are smuggling a child, then we will prosecute you and that child will be separated from you as required by law", Sessions said in May. "They can go to our ports of entry if they want to claim asylum". "I hate the children being taken away", he said Friday. Sessions called the system "generous".

Members of Congress from both parties have called for the Trump administration to end the separation of families. "They are very well taken care of", she said. Do you know someone else we should interview for this story? "If you smuggle illegal aliens across an extraordinarily risky journey, we will prosecute you".

The Trump administration's zero-tolerance policy at the border has been the focus of several dispatches from Border Patrol facilities in Texas where hundreds of migrants-many of them children-are being kept in a "series of cages created by metal fencing".

Nielsen said she had not heard the audio recording. She framed the issue as anyone who votes against their preferred policy is voting against the "rule of law". "Are you intending to send a message?"

Cruz said his bill would build temporary shelters where immigrant families could stay together in cases where there was no threat to the children's safety, double the number of federal immigration judges and speed handling of asylum applications. "It's a simple choice", she said. "We didn't separate them", said Cecilia Muñoz, who was a policy adviser to Obama.
