Canada Has Just Passed a Landmark Bill Legalizing Recreational Marijuana

Canada has voted to legalise cannabis for recreational use

Canada is now set to become only the second country worldwide to legalize the recreational use of cannabis after the Senate voted overwhelmingly to change the laws.

"The impact is we're going to have all those involved in illegal marijuana peddling right now becoming large corporations and making a lot of money and they're going to be doing it at the expense of vulnerable people in this country", said Conservative Sen.

The Government is expected to decide a date that would legalise it in early or mid-September.

Canada has legalised the recreational use of marijuana, with the Cannabis Act passing its final hurdle on Tuesday. The federal government and the provinces also still need to publish regulations that will govern cannabis trade.

While a Sky Data poll has found most Britons agree that cannabis should be made legal for medicinal purposes, it is a far more even split when it comes to recreational use - with 41% in favour and 40% against.

The news was also greeted with enthusiasm by marijuana advocates in the U.S. Don Hartleben, who manages Dank of America, a retail cannabis store just south of the border in Blaine, Washington, said Canada's legalization was not only politically exciting, but a potential business boon for him.

The task force recommended adults be allowed to carry up to 30 grams of pot and grow up to four plants.

Government unveiled its marijuana legislation for the province back in May, including laws around safety, sales, and possession limits for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.

Marijuana will not be sold in the same location as alcohol or tobacco.

"This is a historic milestone for our industry and for our country that will reverberate around the world as Canada solidifies its progressive leadership on cannabis", said Vic Neufeld, CEO of Aphria in a press release. "I don't think it is of such importance to warrant an extraordinary intervention".

"At some level, we know that spending more than half of your waking hours intoxicated for years and years on end is not increasing the likelihood that you'll win a Pulitzer Prize or discover the cure for cancer", Jon Caulkins, a drug policy expert at Carnegie Mellon University, told Vox. "A courageous move on the part of the government". "We expect investment flows into the nation's legal cannabis sector to jump, deal activity and consolidation to rise". "It ends a prohibition model that inhibited and discouraged public health".

Conservative senators remained staunchly opposed to legalization.

"We are now in the midst of a transition process, and we will have more to say once we form government", said PC spokesperson Simon Jefferies.
