Dwight Howard Traded To Brooklyn Nets

Timofey Mozgov Dwight Howard

The Hornets are sending Howard and the $23.8 million left on his contract to the Nets for Timofey Mozgov, two future draft picks (the 45th pick in Thursday's draft and a 2021 second-round pick) and cash, per Wojnarowski.

Charlotte was determined to move Howard this offseason.

The deal can't be completed until the moratorium ends on July 6. Because this is Dwight Howard we're talking about here, it seemed like a matter of time until a report surfaced that indicated there was some tension centering around him in his now-former team's locker room.

But he wore out his welcome after one season and was dealt to Charlotte. While the draft picks will certainly hold value to new general manager Mitch Kupchak, this deal is all about shifting money around. By contrast, Howard has averaged 17.4 points, 12.7 rebound and two blocks per game since joining the league in 2004. After spending the first eight seasons of his career in Orlando, Howard has played for the Lakers (2012-13), the Houston Rockets (2013-16), the Hawks (2016-17), the Hornets (2017-18) and, now, the Nets.

The Nets will be Howard's sixth National Basketball Association team in the past eight seasons and his fourth different franchise in four years.

The trade frees up immediate financial space for Charlotte, which found itself right up against the tax with a roster that missed the 2018 playoffs, and frees up Brooklyn to potentially sign two max-salary players in free agency next year.
