Saudi and UAE coalition forces enter Yemen’s Hodeidah airport

Malaysia's military involvement in Saudi-led war in Yemen must end - Lawyers for Liberty

Iran long has denied arming the rebels, known as Houthis, despite reports by the United Nations, Western countries and outside groups linking it to the rebels' arsenal. There was no immediate comment from the Houthis.

Kristine Beckerle, Yemen researcher at Human Rights Watch, said Hodeidah residents were anxious about the dangers of land mines placed on roads they might take to escape the war zone.

A Saudi-led coalition entered the main compound of Yemen's Hodeidah airport on Tuesday, Yemeni military sources in the alliance and a resident told Reuters.

Col. Turki Al-Malki, spokesman of the Coalition forces to restore legitimacy in Yemen, said that the missile was launched deliberately from Saada governorate of Yemen to target densely populated civilian areas.

Stephane Dujarric, the spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, told reporters that about 5,200 families, or around 26,000 people, have fled the fighting and sought safety within their own districts or in other areas in Hudaydah governorate.

The port city is the entry point for 70 percent of essentials to war-torn Yemen where millions are at risk of starvation.

Earlier in the day, witnesses said another airstrike targeted a tractor driver and his assistant in eastern Hodeida. "The streets are nearly empty, deserted", he said, adding that most were heading for Sanaa, Raymah and Wusab, in Houthi-controlled areas inland.

The rare display came as the UAE-backed Amaleqa brigades, supported by airstrikes and naval shelling from the Saudi-led coalition, tried to storm the southern and western parts of the Hodeida airport.

Global humanitarian agencies have warned that an assault on Hodeidah would be a major disaster to the densely populated port city and would block aid supplies to more than 20 million people.

A top Emirati official acknowledged how the campaign for Hodeida goes will determine the likelihood of an end to Yemen's war.

"Coalition's aid shipments have frequently been confiscated by militias and found their way to the black market but this has not derailed the coalition commitment to alleviate the humanitarian crisis", he said.

Those advanced drones have been flown into the radar arrays of Saudi Arabia's Patriot missile batteries, according to Conflict Armament Research, disabling them and allowing the Houthis to fire ballistic missiles into the kingdom unchallenged. Around two-thirds of the country's population of 27 million relies on aid.

The Houthis seized control of Sanaa in September 2014, later pushing south toward the port city of Aden.

The Saudi-led coalition intervened in Yemen in March 2015.

So far, there have been "four or five civilians" killed, Gargash said, which he blamed on the Houthis.
