International Yoga Day: India takes a deep breath with Modi on the mat

He said in fact, yoga has become the biggest mass movement across the globe in the quest for good health and wellbeing, which is crucial to the creation of a peaceful world. Hundreds of people performed Yoga asanas with the Chief Minister. Modi said that the way to lead a calm, creative and content life was yoga. Prime Minister performed Yogasan, Pranayama and Dhyan with about 50,000 yoga enthusiasts and volunteers at the Forest Research Institute campus. Yoga basically revolves around elevating the life force or "Kundalini" at the base of the spine. "I hope that yoga can become a binding force for the world", he said in his video address to inaugurate the center, the brainchild of Rajya Sabha MP and Essel Group Chairman Subhash Chandra.

The Prime Minister said that yoga is one of the most precious gifts and termed it is "ancient yet modern". The Bharathidasan University observed the day with training sessions on yoga and meditation. The United Nations announced to celebrate December 21, 2014, as International Yoga Day on June 21. Instead of increasing suffering, yoga heals.

Wearing a white t-shirt and a pair of white pants, Mr Modi performed breathing exercises and asanas along with thousands of other yoga enthusiasts who performed the same on saffron yoga mats.

"The word yoga means to unite".

It has been four years today since Yoga Day has been internationally recognised.

Meanwhile, Union ministers Rajnath Singh, Ram Vilas Paswan, Ravi Shankar Prasad Nitin Gadkari, Suresh Prabhu, Uma Bharti also took part in yoga events in Lucknow, Nagpur, Chennai, Rudraprayag, Hajipur, and Patna respectively.

"The gems of India's unique heritage, such as yoga, will be respected by the world at large only when we ourselves respect our culture and traditions", he said. He reiterated that Yoga not only adds to the growth of the physique, it even helps keeping people away from mental illnesses.

Prior to the celebrations marking International Yoga Day, the Muktinath temple in Nepal took Yoga to a higher level when monks, spiritual teachers and locals practiced Yoga Asansas at an elevation of 12500ft above sea level on June 17, 2018.

Emphasising that yoga is not limited to exercises and postures, he said the ancient Indian practice involves a deep search into the body mind and spirit and "leads to greater understanding of oneself, which leads further to social discipline and in turn to ethics and enduring values of life".
