Ardern names new-born daughter Neve Te Aroha

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and partner Clarke Gayford

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern leaves hospital with her baby daughter, Niamh Te Aroha Ardern Gayford.

Ardern announced Neve's birth on her official Instagram account Thursday, saying the baby arrived at 4.45 pm local time, weighing 3.31 kilograms (7.3 pounds).

Emerging from Auckland Hospital with their sleeping baby Sunday morning local time (Saturday evening ET), Ardern and Gayford told waiting media they had named her Neve Te Aroha Ardern Gayford.

The birth capped an eventful year for Ardern, who became prime minister in October just three months after taking charge of the Labour Party as it languished in the polls. "We're all doing really well thanks to the wonderful team at Auckland City Hospital", she said in her post.

She is thought to be the second elected leader in modern history who has given brith while holding office.

Speaking to reporters as she held her daughter in a blanket and beanie, an overjoyed Ardern thanked the public for their support said "we're not placing any great expectations on this little baby except for happiness and love".

Ardern was driven to hospital by Gayford before 6am on Thursday.

"Baby slept a lot more last night ... but the PM admits she didn't sleep much while baby slept which is probably because she is still very excited about everything".

They also share a birthday with former Pakistan Prime Minister and first female leader of a Muslim nation Benazir Bhutto.

"Over the next six weeks we'll do what every other parent does and learn the little nuances ... and just figure things out as we go". During her absence, Deputy Prime Minster Winston Peters will cover the day-to-day government operations.

Gayford said the birth was "all a bit of a blur. for both of us".

"It's just something really lovely in a world where so much is unfair that we're all very excited about it", said Frances Gerbic, a music teacher living in Auckland.

"I'll be Prime Minister AND a mum, and Clarke will be "first man of fishing" and stay at home dad".

Mr Gayford, a 40-year-old television presenter, will be the child's primary carer once Ms Ardern returns to parliament.

"So I hope for little girls and boys that actually there's a future where they can make choices about how they raise their family and what kind of career they have that are based on what they want and what makes them happy", she said.
