Prince William honours Holocaust victims during Jerusalem trip

Prince William watches England thrash Panama in replay

Prince William started his busy Israel tour Tuesday with a visit to Jerusalem's Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial. His great-grandmother, Princess Alice of Greece - the mother of the Duke of Edinburgh - is recognised by the memorial for her role in rescuing Jews during the Holocaust by hiding three members of a family called Cohen in her palace in Athens during the Nazi occupation of Greece. "It's a great honour for me to be able to say thank you, symbolically, to the British people who saved my life".

William, a 36-year-old grandson of Queen Elizabeth and second in line to the throne, will see religious sites, honor Holocaust victims and meet Jewish and Arab youths, and Israeli and Palestinian leaders.

William toured the Yad Vashem Museum accompanied by Yad Vashem Chairman Avner Shalev, and Britain's Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis.

Later, President Reuven Rivlin told the prince about his childhood in Jerusalem living under the British mandate and asked him to deliver a "message of peace" to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, whom he will meet later in the week.

Prince William will then attend an event in central Tel Aviv where Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Hulda will be present, and finish his day at UK Ambassador David Quarrey's residence in Ramat Gan. "It was as if he knew us, he knew the background and he made us feel so at home. He wants to get a flavor of the country".

In a statement to launch the trip Kensington Palace had said a day "in the Occupied Palestinian Territories will begin with a short briefing on the history and geography of Jerusalem's Old City from a viewing point at the Mount of Olives".

She said Israeli and Palestinian officials had pointed out to her it was a highly politicised place so people would be scrutinising his every step and every comment. Jerusalem Affairs Minister Zeev Elkin - who is running for mayor of the city in this year's elections - called the reference a "distortion" that can not "change reality".

In signing the Yad Vashem guestbook, the prince called it a "profoundly moving experience" and said the Holocaust was "almost impossible to comprehend".

Just when we were beginning to think Meghan Markle and Prince Harry had Will and Kate beat for cutest royal couple, Prince William swooped in, giving a sweet (and Instagram-era appropriate) tribute to his wife of seven years. The pair later watched the England-Panama World Cup match together.
