South Korea picks candidates for reunions with North Korean families

The North has long accused the USA of provoking the 1950-53 Korean War as part of a plan for global domination and blames it for the division of the peninsula, agreed between Moscow and Washington in the closing days of World War II.

He said Washington hoped to achieve major disarmament by North Korea within the next 2-1/2 years, within Trump's current presidential term, which ends on January 20, 2021.

In a statement, a U.D. official said the timeline will clarify what the implementation of the summit agreement should look like.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo reportedly said there is no timeline for North Korea to dismantle its nuclear weapons despite the historic summit agreement between President Trump and Kim Jong Un.

"We'll know pretty soon if they're going to operate in good faith or not", the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Some analysts have said full and irreversible disarmament could take 15 years or more, so the Trump administration's goal is presumably to complete solid initial steps that will demonstrate North Korea is truly committed to following that long path.

A 42-minute documentary-style news special was aired on the state television network two days after the summit and has been repeated frequently since, meaning that by now there are probably few North Koreans who are unaware of the changes in the air.

The day after the Singapore summit Pompeo said Washington hoped to achieve "major disarmament" by North Korea within Trump's current term, which ends on 20 January 2021.

Kim Jong Un's decision to ditch the rally is the latest sign that tensions between the USA and North Korea are easing. He also reaffirmed his pledge to give up nuclear arms, and the United States on Friday said it would halt some joint military drills on the peninsula over the next three months in support of diplomacy.

Pompeo said a week ago he was likely to travel back to North Korea "before too terribly long" to try to flesh out commitments made at the summit.

Mattis will also push for more regional security cooperation from China by pointing out that the suspension of US military exercises with South Korea satisfies a major Chinese strategic objective, which is the real reason China has insisted so strongly on its "freeze-for-freeze" plan that made suspension of American exercises a precondition for nuclear talks with North Korea.
