Apple and Samsung agree settlement in seven-year-long battle

This is what smartphones looked like before the iPhone

Apple senior vice president of Software Engineering Craig Federighi speaks at the Apple Worldwide Developer Conference in San Jose, California, US, June 4, 2018.

While Samsung had filed to relitigate the case, the two firms eventually reached an out of court settlement, ending the years-long struggle.

That award was seen as a victory for Apple, which had argued in court that design was essential to the iPhone. Terms of the settlement were not made public, according to Reuters.

After the filing, "all remaining claims and counterclaims in this case are hereby dismissed with prejudice, to the extent such are still pending, and all parties shall bear their own attorneys' fees and costs", Justice Lucy Koh wrote in her order today. Apple ignited the smartphone revolution with iPhone and it is a fact that Samsung blatantly copied our design.

"This case has always been about more than money", the statement read. Apple and Samsung in a district court filing in San Jose, California, confirmed that they were settling the issue, which has continued for almost seven years.

Despite their legal issues, both Apple and Samsung are still the global leaders in term of smartphone sales, though Chinese phone makers Huawei and OPPO have begun to eat into Samsung's market share recently. There was even a case heard by the Supreme Court in 2016.

After appeals and trials, this $1.05 billion amount was reduced, and Samsung agreed to pay some damages.

Two utility patents also involved apply to "bounce-back" and "tap-to-zoom" functions.

The lawsuit started in 2011, when Apple alleged infringement of patents, trademarks, user interface and style against Samsung's then-new Nexus Android phones. The court originally sided with Apple in 2012, ordering Samsung to pay more than $1 billion in damages.
