Emirates flights to and from Bali delayed due to volcanic activity

Air New Zealand says flight NZ245 from Auckland to Bali, due to depart today, has been cancelled as a result of the volcanic activity.

Airnav Indonesia corporate secretary Didiet Radityo said in a statement that as of 13.25 p.m. local time volcanic ash from Mount Agung's eruption was no longer disrupting the airspace around the airport.

Malaysia-based AirAsia axed 22 flights to and from the Indonesian holiday island as Mount Agung, about 75km from the tourist hub in Kuta, erupted again.

Foreign tourists sit at a photo booth as their flight to Bali was canceledled due to Mount Agung's eruption, at Lombok International airport in Lombok Tengah, Indonesia, June 29, 2018. Several flights were cancelled or rescheduled on Thursday.

At Bali's worldwide airport, hundreds of passengers were queuing in the lobby of the terminal to get updates from airlines, while some slept on the floor next to their baggage.

Airlines avoid flying through volcanic ash as it can damage aircraft engines, clog fuel and cooling systems and hamper visibility. Those missed flights have been re-booked to leave tomorrow morning. However, there still remains a 4-kilometer no-go zone around Mount Agung's peak.

Bali's Government Tourism Office said at 7am local time on Friday (12am BST) people living 60 to 70 kilometres away from the summit in South Bali faced no immediate threat.

Australia's national airline Qantas said in a statement that it's "currently not safe" to operate Bali flights.

The 3031-metre high volcano's last deadly eruptions occurred in 1963 and 1964, during which about 1200 people were killed. Authorities are still scrutinising the situation and have not raised the alert level yet.

Indonesia is the world's most active volcanic region and lies on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where tectonic plates collide, causing frequent volcanic and seismic activities.
