50 deaths in Quebec attributed to heat as hot, humid weather subsides

19 People Have Now Died Because Of The Montreal Heat Wave featured image

Health authorities in the Canadian province of Quebec say 33 people have died from heat-related complications in the last few days. However, he said public health officials believe the death toll may rise depending on how people adjust after such extreme temperatures.

Numerous victims were men over the age of 50 living alone in private apartments and seniors' residences, according to Dr. David Kaiser with Montreal's public health department.

This, too, played a factor in the current heat wave, which began June 29.

"Majority have a chronic disease condition", said Dr. Mylene Drouin, head of the regional health authority.

Eighteen of the dead were reported in the provincial capital Montreal, according to regional public health director Mylene Drouin.

But Ontario does not track heat related deaths in the same way as Quebec and does not report on potential causes of death without a coroner's investigation.

The people who died were living out of bounds and often vulnerable due to conditions such as substance abuse, chronic ailments and mental illnesses, they added. "Obviously when we get there and the person may have passed, they're very rarely already with family".

Meanwhile, a unsafe heat wave is expected to grip California and parts of the southwest Friday and into the weekend, threatening millions of people and likely fueling existing wildfires in the United States.

According to the Ministry, numerous dead were over 65 years of age and had physical or mental health problems.
