North Korea Calls U.S. Attitude to Latest Talks ‘Regrettable’

It is Mr Pompeo's third trip to Pyongyang

Before departing for Japan, Pompeo briefly addressed the meetings with North Korea, saying, "Some places [there was] a great deal of progress; other places there's still more work to be done". But following the stinging commentary from the North, he allowed that much work remains.

The statement rejected what it described as Washington's "gangster-like" demand for rapid nuclear disarmament.

You asked Pompeo: "'Did he sleep well?' If you knew what I knew about what we could do to the leadership of North Korea, you wouldn't sleep very well", Graham said.

However, it said that it could not help but feel regret about the attitude and stance the USA had.

'Our expectations and hopes were so naive it could be called foolish'.

"The North Koreans. understand that President Trump needs a win; he needs to have a good story coming out of his high-risk diplomacy with North Korea going into his delicate and maybe-highly charged negotiations with the Europeans and the Russians next week", she added.

Also high on the agenda is the issue of the remains of US soldiers missing from the 1950-53 Korean War.

The North's statement, coming so soon after Pompeo's trip, was sure to fuel growing skepticism in the USA over how serious Kim is about giving up his nuclear arsenal.

The spokesman said that the first high-level talks between the two countries following the summit failed to consolidate mutual trust, only to risk undermining the North's commitment to denuclearization.

Pompeo is due to meet in Tokyo on Sunday with his Japanese and South Korean counterparts and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

President Trump may have declared diplomatic victory immediately after his cordial June meeting with Kim Jong-un.

Both issues are considered essential tests of whether Kim is serious about talks. "The US still believes North Korea will denuclearize substantially before we give them any major rewards, while North Korea believes that the two need to move together jointly, and both make concessions". And that process will begin to develop over the days that followed.

The talks are part of a broader US initiative to persuade North Korea to give up its nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

Pompeo met with North Korean official Kim Yong Chul on Friday and Saturday to discuss denuclearization, just weeks after President Donald Trump met with North Korean leader Kim Jung Un in Singapore.

Pompeo called on North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to replicate Vietnam's "miracle" of economic growth by improving ties with the US, vowing that America keeps its promises with former foes. State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert added that this meeting will be held at the inter-Korean border village of Panmunjom, involving working-level officials including those from the Defense Department. Pompeo spoke with Trump, Bolton and White House chief of staff John Kelly on Saturday before his second round of meetings with Kim Yong Chol.

And while both sides are still at the very tentative stages of trust-building, he said: "It's going to take time, but eventually we can not just keep on going this way because we will end up going nowhere".

"So thinking about those discussions you might have not slept well last night", he suggested.

"If they are able to do this, they will be remembered, and Chairman Kim will be remembered, as a hero of the Korean people", Mr Pompeo said.

There was no immediate explanation of what needed to be clarified, but the two sides have been struggling to specify what exactly "denuclearization" would entail and how it could be verified to the satisfaction of the United States. Trump said after the Singapore summit that Kim had agreed to send the remains back to the United States. Talks will also cover the possibility of recovering the remains of U.S. troops missing from the Korean War.
