Meet Trump's Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh

Pres. Trump: 'Very Close' To Making Final Supreme Court Pick

U.S. Sen. Bob Casey, D-Scranton, said Monday he will oppose appointing whoever President Donald Trump nominates to the Supreme Court.

Mr. Trump has reportedly narrowed his list down to four names: Judge Amy Coney Barrett of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, Judge Thomas Hardiman of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, Judge Brett Kavanaugh of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and Judge Raymond Kethledge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.

"Judge Kavanaugh has impeccable credentials, unsurpassed qualifications and a proven commitment to equal justice under the law", Trump said.

The 53-year-old Kavanaugh, who clerked for Kennedy and who now sits on the US court of appeals for the D.C. Circuit Court, emphasized in his remarks accepting the nomination the importance of judicial independence.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., told Trump he believes Kethledge and Hardiman might be easier for the Senate to confirm than either Kavanaugh or Barrett, The New York times reported, citing Republican officials briefed on the conversations.

The Pittsburgh-based federal appeals judge was the runner up to Justice Neil Gorsuch for the Supreme Court nomination past year.

Still, some of the 1.2 percent of votes when Collins bucked a Republican president's nominee were notable.

Trump has also favored Brett Kavanaugh, who has years of federal experience and is described as a mild-mannered and fair-minded by conservative groups.

Judge Kavanaugh has served as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit since 2006, authoring more than 300 opinions, including 11 that have been affirmed by the Supreme Court.

"I'm open to voting yes".

Republicans in the Senate need to be completely united on the pick, because of the delicate nature of their majority. Sen.

Democrats are ramping up opposition to the president's eventual pick with a focus on the prospect that the candidate that's confirmed would vote to overturn Roe v. Wade, a decades-old ruling that struck down laws that criminalized or restricted access to abortions. Three of the judges are Asian-American men and one is a Hispanic man. Kennedy administered the judicial oath to his former clerk.

"I am concerned that he's making it like a game show", Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy told NPR radio. Kavanaugh has ties to the Bush family, which has often drawn ire from Trump, but he has investigated the Clintons and recommended the impeachment of former President Bill Clinton.

The nominee must be confirmed by the US Senate, which the Republican president's party narrowly controls 51-49. As a result, Democrats have accused Republicans of stealing a Supreme Court seat. He did, however, dissent recently on an appeals court decision that allowed a pregnant teenaged illegal immigrant who was in federal custody to have an abortion.

If the nomination is delayed and Democrats capture an extra seat in the Senate in November elections, Trump could be forced to compromise with liberals in order to fill Kennedy's seat. She needs to make it through a closed primary, in which only Republicans can vote, for her reelection bid in 2020, making opposing Trump risky. Ten Democrats from states that Trump won are up for re-election this fall and will be under tremendous pressure to back the president's nominee.

But in a law review article in 2009, Kavanaugh wrote that it was not in the public's interest to indict a sitting president. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., would guide the nominee through the confirmation process, including preparing for meetings with senators. Three Democratic senators who voted for Gorsuch - Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, Joe Donnelly of IN and Joe Manchin of West Virginia - are up for re-election IN states Trump won handily IN 2016.
