In that incident, a Romanian NATO soldier was injured.

The shooting happened at the airport in Tarinkot, the capital of Uruzgan province, a local police officer told AFP.

Some of the USA forces are involved in counterterrorism operations, particularly against the local Islamic State group.

The statement did not detail the incident, only saying that "in accordance with U.S. Department of Defense policy, the name of the service member killed in action is being withheld until 24 hours after next of kin notification is complete".

A "conscientious" Afghan soldier, Ahmadi said, turned his gun on "American invaders" and killed four of them.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, on a surprise visit to Afghanistan on Monday, promised support for President Ashraf Ghani's bid to start peace talks with the Taliban and repeated the United States would be willing to take part. Western officials say most insider attacks stem from personal grudges and cultural misunderstandings rather than insurgent plots.

They happen when "Afghan service members or attackers wearing Afghan uniforms fire on USA or coalition troops", Reuters notes, adding that such attacks "have been a regular feature of the conflict in Afghanistan, although their frequency has diminished in recent years". Though a recent ceasefire gave people hope that an end is in sight, it lasted for only three days, according to The Washington Post. Afghan commandos carried out the operation with support from US special forces and air power.

Afghan civilians increasingly found themselves in the crosshairs during an unusually intense period of fighting last winter.

The last insider attack that resulted in a USA casualty occurred in June previous year.

The document also found a 14-percent increase in the number of Afghan army personnel killed or wounded while on local patrols and during checkpoint operations.
