Kim Jong-un sends pointless letter to his new pal Donald Trump

U.S. President Trump and North Korea's Kim walk together before their working lunch during their summit in Singapore

Trump wrote: 'A very nice note from Chairman Kim of North Korea.

"I deeply appreciate the energetic and extraordinary efforts made by Your Excellency Mr President for the improvement of relations between the two countries and the faithful implementation of the joint statement".

Kim continued by expressing confidence that "the strong will, honest efforts and unique approach" to bring about a new future between the USA and North Korea would "come to fruition".

Mr Pompeo had said progress was made during his two-day visit to Pyongyang.

Kim made that commitment when he met Mr Trump in Singapore last month.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has ordered his aides to "re-explain" to Tokyo the findings of a probe into the whereabouts of missing Japanese nationals suspected to have been abducted by Pyongyang decades ago, according to a South Korean activist.

President Donald Trump shows the document that he and North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un signed acknowledging the progress of the talks and pledge to keep momentum going, after their summit at the Capella Hotel on Sentosa island in Singapore, June 12, 2018.

"We will be ready", Nauert told reporters aboard Pompeo's plane, as the top United States diplomat flew home to Washington after attending a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit. Reports say North Korea is now asking for higher-level talks for Sunday.

Mr Kim had agreed during the summit with President Trump to recover "POW/MIA remains, including the immediate repatriation of those already identified".

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo ignored a question about the apparent snub when asked by reporters traveling with him in Brussels on Thursday.

North Korean representatives didn't show up for scheduled talks with the USA about returning the remains of fallen American soldiers.

North Korea proposed to reschedule the meeting for Sunday.

"We will be ready", U.S. state department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said.

Mr Pompeo has insisted that a raft of tough economic sanctions imposed on North Korea would remain in place until "final, fully verified denuclearisation" occurs. North Korea had also released the three American prisoners the government had been holding ahead of the summit.

State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said the North Koreans called around midday to say the meeting would be delayed until July 15.

However, recovery efforts were suspended when the relationship between both countries worsened, as the North began the advancement of its nuclear programme.
