Israel shoots down Syria drone; Netanyahu to meet Putin

Israeli soldiers at an army base in the Golan Heights look out across the border with Syria

Earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Russian President Vladimir Putin that Israel will not tolerate an Iranian military presence in Syria.

The Israeli military tightened the northern border of the occupied Golan Heights in the summer of 2015, reportedly in an effort to prevent access to Syria by Druze living in the occupied area who said they would cross the border in order to protect their brethren in the ongoing Syrian civil war.

An Israeli military ambulance drives past tanks in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights, near the border with Syria. There were no reports of injuries over the drone's incursion. Israel worries that it could deploy troops or allow Iranian and "Hezbollah" allies to set up emplacements near Israeli lines.

The military said the drone did not carry weapons and was created to carry out surveillance missions.

Netanyahu's remarks came as reports said Russian Federation would act to push Iranian forces from near the Syria-Israel border, and in exchange, Israel is expected not to "intervene" in Assad's efforts to stabilize his rule. A source in the Syrian military has told media that the attack was perpetrated by Israel, although the IDF has yet to comment on the claims.

"Israel can not allow [an] Iranian presence inside Syria".

The two leaders will also watch together the World Cup semifinal between England and Croatia scheduled for late Wednesday.

"UAV from Syria intercepted by Patriot missile, causing sirens in Golan and Emek HaYarden Regional Councils", an army statement said.

"There should be no military forces in the area of separation other than those of UNDOF", a United Nations spokesman said.

"Today, an global Islamic army has been formed in Syria, and the voices of the Muslims are heard near the Golan", Salami said, as quoted by the Times of Israel.

Netanyahu's government has made clear it would not now cede the plateau and has been lobbying for USA recognition of Israel's claim of sovereignty there.

"The [Israeli military] holds the Syrian regime accountable for the actions carried out in its territory and warns it from further action against Israeli forces", it said.

In the heaviest Israeli firing since the start of the Syrian War, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said the strikes killed at least 23 military personnel, including Syrians and non-Syrians.
