'Russia is not our friend': Arkansas lawmakers comment on Trump-Putin meeting

President Donald Trump answers questions about the 2016 U.S Election collusion during a joint press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin after their summit

On Monday, Trump stood beside Russian President Vladimir Putin and challenged American intelligence agencies' findings that Moscow had interfered in the 2016 USA elections.

Republicans and Democrats from both Idaho and Washington had strong words for President Trump's meeting in Helsinki Monday with Russian President Vladimir Putin, ranging from a blown chance to "horrifying and deeply alarming".

The Texas Republican said having a clear strategy is necessary going into a meeting with other heads of state, just a day after Trump had a one-on-one summit with his Russian counterpart, President Vladimir Putin.

"I think we have great opportunities together as two countries that frankly, we have not been getting along very well for the last number of years", he said.

For his "A Closer Look" segment, NBC's Seth Meyers broke down Trump's news conference with Putin, saying the president delivered "one of the most surreal performances by a president in modern American history" and "twisted himself in knots to take Putin's side". I will say this: I don't see any reason why it would be, " Trump said. "We need to take measures to prevent this from happening again and to continue to hold Russian Federation accountable", Sullivan said in a statement. "It's the thing that he told me when he went in". Instead, he denounced the "stupidity" of his own country's policy, especially the decision to investigate election interference following the findings of US intelligence agencies.

"We don't have anything on them", Putin said.

Asked if Mr Putin was an adversary, he said: "Actually I called him a competitor and a good competitor he is and I think the word competitor is a compliment".

"We're all sort of used to Trump by now, and you say to yourself that we've gone as low as we can, and then you see what he said, and it's so much worse than you'd think", Deitz said.

But Donald Trump again gave Vladimir Putin a pass Monday for what amounts to an act of war. San Francisco resident and Trump donor Scott Robertson wasn't fazed by the president's remarks.

President Donald Trump assured reporters and the public Monday that relations with Russian Federation will improve. It is a fact that Russian entities hacked US presidential campaign accounts, launched cyberattacks against at least 21 states, attacked USA voting system software companies, and engaged in social media misinformation campaigns during the 2016 campaign. Russian Federation "remains hostile to our most basic values and ideals", Ryan said.

"Answering them in full, without hesitation, will demonstrate that you do still hold America's interests first", the Democratic senators wrote.
