No confidence motion: Modi calls for disruption-free debate

Jay Panda's resignation accepted: Lok Sabha Speaker

Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi surprised Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday when he interrupted a no-confidence debate by walking across the parliament floor to give his rival a hug.

The Congress, the main opposition party which voted in favour of the TDP-sponsored motion last night, has now lost trust of people, he said.

The Modi government is expected to have a smooth sailing when it faces the first no-confidence motion in four years in the Lok Sabha.

The motion was defeated by 325-126 votes by the lawmakers.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Friday evening accused the Congress party of betraying national interest, by questioning the Army's "surgical strikes" across the Line of Control in Pakistan, as well as the eyeball-to-eyeball standoff between Indian and Chinese soldiers on the Doklam plateau previous year.

In his address during the debate on no-confidence motion in Lok Sabha, Gandhi said the French president had clearly conveyed to him that there was no problem in sharing details relating to the Rafale contrary to what the government has been saying and that the "defence minister has clearly spoken an untruth". And that too minutes after @HarsimratBadal_ said that Parliament is not for "Munna Bhai's puppy- jhappis", a Twitter user said. "I want to assure people of Andhra Pradesh that they will not be left behind, and the government will ensure their welfare and development", he said.

Modi said that the Congress was so power hungry that it had pulled the rug off the feet of any non-Congress government whenever any attempt to form such a government was made. Why was he in such a hurry, the Prime Minister said, to occupy his seat.

Interestingly, after the speech, Gandhi walked up to PM and hugged him.

Sumanth Raman, also a journalist, called his move to hug Modi "audacious". He claimed that UPA government had negotiated a price of Rs 520 crore for each fighter jet while the NDA government had hiked it to Rs 1600 crore per aircraft. I am proud to say, I am a chowkidar and a bhagidar but not a thekedar (contractor) or a saudagar (trader). Everybody knows the relationship that Prime Minister Modi has with a few business people, and everyone can see the amount of money that goes into his marketing. "The government sailed through with a bigger margin than expected, but with Lok Sabha elections looming, the drama has just begun", the newspaper said.

Speaking to media, Gandhi said, "I stand by what I said". After recovering from an apparent shock moment, the Prime Minister called Gandhi back towards him and the two shook their hands.

The BJP and RSS have taught him what it means to be in the Congress, what Lord Shiva means and what being a Hindu means, he said.
