Susan Rice: White House 'Serving a Hostile Foreign Power'

Trump writes giant, misspelled ‘THERE WAS NO COLUSION’ reminder on Russia statement

Most recently he told CBS news anchor Jeffrey Glor he used his one-one-one meeting with Putin to express strong concern about Russian interference in the 2016 election.

While taking questions from reporters at a cabinet meeting, Trump said "thank you very much, no" after ABC News White House correspondent Cecilia Vega asked whether the USA is still a target of Russian-led cyberattacks and meddling into U.S. elections - directly contradicting what director of national intelligence Dan Coats has said on the matter.

Lawmakers, alarmed with Trump's conduct only days after US authorities indicted 12 Russian spies on meddling charges, were trying to formulate a legislative response.

Trump and his aides have sought to calm the storm of criticism over the president's meetings overseas over the past week in which he sharply criticized European allies and declined to confront Russian President Vladimir Putin over Moscow's meddling in the 2016 election.

Trump on Tuesday tried to walk back comments that he believed Russian President Vladimir Putin over American intelligence chiefs on Russian interference in the 2016 election, saying that he had misspoken a day earlier after a summit meeting with Putin in Helsinki. Vega followed up. "No", Trump said. And they directly contradict assertions from Dan Coats, the director of national intelligence, who has repeatedly said that Russian Federation continues to try to interfere with American democracy.

"I have said that numerous times before, and I would say that that is true, yeah", Trump said. "I'm not sure we can change his mind about it, but I'll tell you, we can pass a law that does something about it".

And he voiced support for USA intelligence agencies - a day after he had refused to accept their findings on Russia's election interference over Putin's denials - and vowed to take action to prevent further attacks.

"I don't want to get into whether or not he's lying", Mr. Trump said.

US intelligence officials have said Russian election interference efforts are continuing and now target the upcoming congressional elections in November.

HORSLEY: It sounds like sort of typical Trumpian hyperbole, but some analysts I've talked with say it's not without foundation.

Chuck Schumer, leader of the opposition Democrats in the Senate, said the President's retraction of his previous comments was a sign of weakness. Earlier in the day, when asked by ABC News" Cecilia Vega if Russian Federation is still targeting the U.S., President Trump replied: "Thank you very much, no." "No?

A few hours later, the White House press secretary, Sarah Sanders, claimed Trump had been answering a different question, and that "we believe the threat still exists".

In separate remarks to reporters, Corker said he also is looking at whether it would be appropriate to request the notes taken by a translator at the private meeting between Trump and Putin in Helsinki.

Members of Congress, including several powerful Republicans, distanced themselves from Trump's remarks and aligned themselves with United States intelligence estimates that Russian Federation had interfered in the election. Do you hold him personally responsible? Could be other people also. But that statement was not acceptable. "A lot of people out there".
