Toronto police searching for motive into deadly shooting

Two dead, 13 injured in Toronto shooting | GuelphMercury.com

Toronto police Chief Mark Saunders says there's "no evidence to support claims" by Daesh that it was responsible for the mass shooting on the Danforth that claimed two lives and wounded 13 more people.

They say she is from Markham, Ontario, and her family is requesting privacy during their time of grief.

Investigators previously identified the other person killed in the shooting as 18-year-old Reese Fallon.

On Sunday, 29-year-old Faisal Hussain opened fire in Toronto's Danforth neighbourhood. It is unknown if Hussain was shot by police or if he took his own life.

The man accused of fatally shooting two people and wounding 13 others on a bustling Toronto street struggled with severe mental illness, his family said on Monday as police sought a motive in the rampage.

Another witness, John Tulloch, told the Star he and his brother had just got out of their auto when he heard somewhere between 20 and 30 gunshots.

"Our hearts are in pieces for the victims and for our city as we all come to grips with this awful tragedy", they said.

Compared to its fellow Canadian cities, Toronto has experienced many more homicides and nondeadly shootings in the past two years, according to the Major Cities Chiefs Association, which represents police executives in the largest US and Canadian cities.

On Tuesday, authorities said gunman Faisal Hussain had expressed support for ISIS and visited the terror group's websites.

A witness said she saw a little girl of around seven or eight years of age being put into an ambulance on a stretcher.

"We wanted to create a safe space within the school today so people could be together", said Shari Schwartz-Maltz. Flags at her former high school and at school administration buildings will be lowered to half-staff, Malloy said. They are also appealing for witnesses and have been loading them onto several city buses to take them to local police divisions.

It is not known if the shooter turned his gun on himself. Saunders declined to release his name and said authorities "do not know why this has happened yet".

Toronto Mayor John Tory told reporters the city of 2.8 million residents had a gun problem, with weapons too readily available to too many people.

The Toronto District School Board said it chose to open the school to mourners after seeing the outpouring of emotion following Fallon's death.

ISIL has claimed responsibility for Sunday's mass shooting on Toronto's Danforth, saying the gunman was among "the soldiers of the Islamic State", but offered no proof of a direct link.

Currently, nine people remain in hospital; six of which are listed in critical condition.
