Lewis Hamilton regains F1 title lead after crazy German GP win

Lewis Hamilton

Hamilton met with stewards for crossing the line between pit entry and the track.

Stewards immediately called out Hamilton to investigate a possible violation of the FIA International Sporting Code.

The 33-year-old Englishman started only 14th in Germany following a mechanical failure in qualifying, but after he scythed his way back through the field, he then took advantage of a dramatic rain-hit conclusion which involved his championship rival Sebastian Vettel crashing out from the lead.

I never get to watch the races but just got home and watching Sky. I wanted to stay collected, stay calm and the team did such a great job today.

"I had it in my hands - small mistake, big disappointment", said the German. "You never knew what was going to happen after the safety auto". "Who knows. That's how it goes".

Lewis Hamilton credited divine intervention and hostile local fans for his remarkable victory at the German Grand Prix.

"But it's not like tonight I will have difficulties to fall asleep because of what I've done wrong. This was up there with them".

Mercedes also regained the initiative in the constructors' championship, much to the delight of company chairman Dieter Zetsche who embraced the Englishman in the unbridled euphoria in the rain that followed the race. By the 15th lap, the Briton had already moved into fifth place and, after Vettel's shock exit in the latter stages, Hamilton went on to win for the 44th time in his career.

"It is a very hard call because on the one side you want to optimise the result and that is what you need to do, but on the other side you need to give both drivers a chance to win the race", said Wolff.

"At a track like this not really, no", he said, when asked if he could find a way to challenge at the front of the race.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff suspected that Hamilton's hydraulics had broken after he hit the kerb, but he was awaiting a full investigation by the team once they had the auto back.

"Yesterday, we saw how bad it can be and in 24 hours, it can all turn around". I have the will to not want to give up. I think this is the transparency we have in the team that it would make no difference.

"It's great to be here on Mercedes home ground - our second home".

Ferrari's other driver, Kimi Raikkonen of Finland, placed third and is to start from the second row beside Dutch driver Max Verstappen (Red Bull), who finished fourth.

The conditions allowed some of the lesser teams to grab some attention, with Sauber's Monegasque rookie Charles Leclerc top of the timesheets ahead of Swedish team mate Marcus Ericsson.
