4 magnitude natural disaster rattles Indonesia

Quake Hits Indonesia's Lombok Island, USGS Says

"Some 40 people are injured and dozens of houses were damaged", Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman for the country's disaster agency, said in a statement.

Nurses tend to those injured in the quake which has left at least three people dead.

A Malaysian climber who was on a hiking trip to Lombok is reportedly among those killed.

A rescue operation is now underway for the tourists trapped by landslides on Mount Rinjani, a Lombok volcano popular for hiking enthusiasts.

At least 162 people were hurt, according to Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency.

More than 38,000 people remained under evacuation orders on Sunday in and around the city of Redding, about 257 km north of the state capital Sacramento.

Besides causing damage to dwelling structures, the quake also impacted Mount Rinjani National Park where a landslide reportedly occurred on the mountain.

A landslide triggered by the quake trapped a group of six at the crater lake of Indonesia's second-highest volcano, he added, with about 100 army, police and other rescuers working to get people down, while helicopters scoured for those still trapped.

Indonesia is a country in south-east Asia, while the island of Lombok is somewhere where lots of people go on holiday.

The US Geological Survey said the epicentre of the natural disaster was 50km (31 miles) north-east of the city of Mataram, in northern Lombok.

Anci, a villager from near the quake's epicenter, told the Associated Press that he and his family spent the night in a makeshift tent, anxious aftershocks could cause more buildings to collapse.

Indonesia is prone to earthquakes due to its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin.

"They calmed down and returned to their room once we explained the quake did not trigger a tsunami, everything is back to normal now", receptionist Ni Nyoman Suwarningsih told AFP.

The quake was on land and did not trigger any waves or tsunami.
