Apple becomes world's first trillion dollar company

Apple first listed in 1980 and its stock has risen more than 50,000% since then.

For as much as Apple shares have increased over the past few days, some analysts and tech observers are confident the stock could rise even higher in the weeks and months ahead.

Still, the iPhone maker's stock is still up 2.3% on Thursday, and up 31% over the past year.

One of five U.S. companies since the 1980s to take a turn as Wall Street's largest company by market capitalization, Apple could lose its lead to the likes of Alphabet Inc. or Amazon.com Inc. if it does not find a major new product or service as demand for smartphones loses steam. Apple's own "Stocks" app, which is based on Yahoo Finance data, also put the company's value at $1.01 trillion. Amazon is worth almost $900 billion while Google and Microsoft are each now worth more than $800 billion.

The iPhone maker was named as the only publicly listed United States company to be valued at $1,000,000,000,000 just before 5pm this afternoon.

Apple's stock market value is greater than the combined capitalization of Exxon Mobil, Procter & Gamble and AT&T.

This meant that Apple shares had to reach $207.04 per share before breaking $1 trillion.

Incidentally, the trigger price for Apple to reach a trillion-dollar valuation has been slowly creeping upwards as the company continues to aggressively buy back shares as part of its capital return program.

The creator of the ubiquitous iPhone is up more than 25 percent this year.
