Pompeo: North Korea far from living up to denuclearization vow

US President Donald Trump received a letter from North Korean leader Kim Jong-un this week, the White House said Thursday, in the latest sign of top-level diplomacy on Pyongyang's denuclearization.

Trump tweeted about the letter on Thursday, thanking Kim for returning the remains of some American war dead from the 1950-1953 Korean War. It comes after a report based on satellite images from July 20 and July 22 revealed that North Korea was dismantling an important satellite launch facility.

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Less than two months after a landmark U.S.

Military pallbearers carry the remains of US service members collected in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea during Repatriation ceremony after arriving to Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Honolulu, Hawaii, Aug. 1 2018.

Byrd, director of the Defense Department laboratory in Hawaii where the 55 cases arrived Wednesday, cited several reasons for saying that at least some of the remains appear to be those of Americans missing from the Korean War.

Byrd noted that "a lot" of the 55 boxes contained references to the village of Sinhung-ri located on the east side of the reservoir where U.S. Army soldiers fought in the battle.

On Tuesday, The Washington Post also reported that U.S. intelligence officials suspect that North Korea is continuing to build new missiles in the same research facility where it used to manufacture ballistic missiles capable of reaching the US.

The US military flew the caskets from Osan Air Base in South Korea.

More than 35,000 Americans died on the Korean Peninsula and 7,702 are still unaccounted for, according to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency. If matches are achieved, identification can be done relatively quickly, he said, but in other cases the identification work will take years.

To work on the additional remains the team of DPAA researchers assigned to identifying the remains of Korean War missing will almost double in size from five to nine.

Trump said in that tweet to Kim that "I look forward to seeing you soon!" The United States formally welcomed home the remains at a ceremony on Aug 1. Despite the summit pledge McKeague said it wasn't until July 15 that North Korea notified the United Nations that it would transfer 55 boxes of remains.

Pompeo cautioned that "no matter how much progress we make", economic sanctions against North Korea will remain, adding that the ball is now in Kim's court.

Byrd was present when North Korean officials turned over the 55 boxes at Wonsan airport in North Korea on July 27, and he was among the USA government specialists who made a further preliminary examination of the contents after the boxes were flown to Osan air base in South Korea the same day. -North Korean searches of battlefields and POW camp graveyards as occurred from 1996 to 2005. "We will see to it in the days ahead that these heroes will be the heroes who led the way to many more homecomings in the future".
