San Jose crews help battle massive Mendocino Complex, Carr fires

Carr Fire

Officials said Wednesday that the Carr Fire was the sixth most destructive wildfire in California history. There are 23 firefighters with five engine companies and seven apparatus helping Cal Fire at the Mendocino Complex and the Carr fires.

The governor said the state will now need to prepare if the economy takes a turn for the worst.

The head of Florida's Forest Service is coordinating with Cal Fire to send help.

Australian fire authorities said the contingent of about 100 firefighters set off as conditions turned gusty in the mountains north of Sacramento, where fierce fires were among 100 burning across 13 western USA states.

Most of the devastation occurred on the night of July 26, when gale-force winds whipped the blaze into a flaming cyclone that jumped the Sacramento River and roared with little warning into Redding and adjacent towns in the scenic Shasta-Trinity region.

"We're concerned with individuals that have no family", Bosenko said. Jerry Brown warned today that "nature is powerful, and we're not on the side of nature", and that devastating blazes are "the new normal".

A 100-square mile fire near Yosemite National Park prompted evacuation orders on Wednesday (Thursday NZT) for the community of Wawona inside the park, which has fewer than 200 residents.

Law enforcement officials said the last four people reported as missing were found safe on Wednesday.

The fire is believed to have been started by a malfunctioning vehicle on July 23.

Just when firefighters were making progress on a massive fire burning in Mendocino and Lake counties, Mother Nature was preparing to deliver another haymaker with forecasters predicting a triple threat of high winds, soaring temperatures and falling humidity.

Weather conditions are doing nothing to aid firefighters in tackling the blaze, as fierce winds fan the flames further.
