Osama bin Laden's mum breaks silence claiming 'good kid' was 'brainwashed'

White House press briefing goes off the rails as CNN's Jim Acosta battles with Sarah Huckabee Sanders over whether the media is 'enemy of the people'

Bin Laden's father, Mohammed bin Awad bin Laden, divorced Alia Ghanem three years after Osama's birth, and had more than 50 children in total.

She said: "My life was very hard because he was so far away from me. I'm very anxious that the hostility whipped up by Trump and some in conservative media will result in somebody getting hurt".

Ghanem insisted her first-born son had been a deeply religious individual who "changed" at university. "He became a different man", Ghanem said of her son.

Earlier Thursday, Ivanka Trump, the president's eldest daughter and an assistant to him, broke with her father and said she did not believe the press was the "enemy of the people." "I politely waited and I called on you even after you interrupted me when I called on your colleague", she chided the CNN reporter. "They got money for their cause", Ghanem said. "I would always tell him to stay away from them, and he would never admit to me what he was doing because he loved me so much." she said.

Ahmad said his mother blamed those around bin Laden but not her son himself.

What Ghanem says in the interview is largely credible and tracks with the little that is publicly known about her relationship with her son.

Hassan said: 'I don't want to go through that again. Why would he throw it all away like that?,' replied the lady.

More prominently, though, Bin Laden is remembered by his family - many of whom still have a great deal of influence in Saudi Arabian society. On May 2, 2011, bin Laden was shot and killed inside a private residential compound in Abbottabad, where he lived with a local family from Waziristan, during a covert operation conducted by members United States forces.

Hassan said his brother was well-respected in the early days when he first travelled to Afghanistan.

While at university, Bin Laden met Abdullah Azzam who was a member of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Bin Laden was shot dead by a US Navy Seal team in Pakistan in 2011 and his son, Hamza a year ago called for revenge terror attacks on the US.

"Then the next thing I knew, Hamza was saying "I'm going to avenge my father".

"It has been 17 years now (since 9/11) and she remains in denial about Osama", Ahmad told The Guardian. Instead, she blames those around him. Read the full piece, which touches on the rise of bin Laden's youngest son. "At the start, we were very proud of him", he said. Think twice about what you are doing. "We continue to see a pervasive messaging campaign from Russian Federation to try and weaken and divide the United States", said Dan Coats, the director of national intelligence. "You are entering awful parts of your soul". "Our family overseas all came back to Saudi", he added.
