China vows to safeguard Iranian nuclear deal

Protesters in Iran attack seminary, break windows

NEW DELHI, Aug 2 (Reuters) - India's monthly oil imports from Iran surged by about 30 percent to a record 768,000 barrels per day (bpd) in July, as state refiners' intake surged ahead of USA sanctions in November, preliminary tanker arrival data obtained by Reuters showed. The financial news provider quoted informed officials on Friday as saying that the U.S. had been unable to persuade China to cut Iranian oil imports and that Beijing's purchases from Tehran last month remained unchanged.

China's Unipec, the trading arm of state oil major Sinopec, has suspended imports of crude oil from the United States due to a growing trade spat between Washington and Beijing, three sources familiar with the situation said on Friday.

Teams of USA officials have been visiting capitals around the world to try to choke off sales of Iranian oil by early November, when US sanctions are due to snap back into effect. The Trump administration said it wanted Iran's oil customers to stop imports by then.

Francis Fannon, the assistant secretary of state for the Bureau of Energy Resources, was recently in China to discuss sanctions, according to a State Department spokesperson.

But US President Donald Trump chose to reimpose punishing sanctions against Iran, whom he has accused of posing a security threat.

If the USA wants negotiations, it should stop pressures and sanctions, Qasemi was quoted as saying by official IRNA news agency.

US officials last week said Iran carried out a similar exercise, though Tehran did not immediately acknowledge it.

Last month, U.S. officials familiar with the matter said the Trump administration had launched a communications campaign to foment unrest and put pressure on Iran to end its nuclear programme and its support of armed groups.

The nuclear deal lifted global sanctions in return for Iran limiting its nuclear program and allowing regular inspections.

"China and Iran unwaveringly maintain normal trade and economic ties".

When pressed by CNBC to answer the questions she was raising, Croft replied, "I think this market will tighten at the end of this year", and added that Venezuelan production continues to fall and will be a contributing factor.

India's oil imports from Iran last month soared by 85 percent from the 415,000 bpd shipments in July 2017, according to the data obtained by Reuters.

China has said it plans to impose tariffs on liquefied natural gas, raising concerns that it could also impose tariffs on oil, said John Kilduff, partner at Again Capital Management in NY.
