Trump would fight any United States special counsel subpoena in court: president's lawyer

Trump fears his son may have inadvertently gotten into legal trouble report

That new admission, however, is completely at odds with the statement Trump crafted for use in the July 2017 news story that first reported the Trump Tower meeting.

However, he revealed in his tweet what many have alleged for more than a year: that the infamous Trump Tower meeting during the height of the 2016 presidential campaign was about obtaining damaging information on Clinton, his opponent for the White House, whom Trump did not specifically mention in his tweet.

Trump launched today's battle by tweeting, "The Fake News hates me saying that they are the Enemy of the People only because they know it's TRUE".

Sekulow also on "This Week" supported the president's claim that there was nothing legally questionable about Trump Jr. having the June 2016 meeting with the Russians.

Trump might as well have just confirmed The Post's report that he is anxious about what the meeting portends for his son.

Since that point, it has resulted in charges against 32 individuals and three Russian companies and five guilty pleas, including those from Trump's deputy campaign chairman and his initial national security adviser.

Trump Jr.'s testimony to Congress contained a similar defense as his father's Sunday tweet, indicating that he saw no reason not to accept a meeting that could yield important information about Clinton, even though he was told that it was part of an effort by the government of a hostile power.

Trump lawyer Jay Sekulow told ABC News' George Stephanopoulos on "This Week" Sunday that he has no knowledge of the president's son being a target of Mueller's probe.

"I had bad information at the time and made a mistake in my statement", Sekulow said Sunday, noting that he had only been working for Trump a short time when he made the misstatement past year.

Sekulow added that he has "no knowledge" of whether federal investigators are probing one of the attendees of the meeting, Donald Trump Jr., even as critics charge that the secretive discussion might have run afoul of campaign finance law. Though the president tweet-claimed that the oppo-research was "totally legal and done all the time in politics", it thoroughly contradicts his earlier claims that the meeting was called to discuss American adoption of Russian orphans. One of his former lawyers, Michael Cohen, is reportedly dishing details about a meeting at Trump tower - between a Russian surrogate and his son.

Manafort is now on trial for unrelated bank and tax fraud charges as part of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation, and Sekulow said that to his knowledge, Trump Jr.is not the target of a federal probe stemming from the meeting.

What did President Trump say?

Donald Jr. said later he realised the meeting was primarily aimed at lobbying against the 2012 Magnitsky sanctions law, which led to Moscow denying Americans the right to adopt Russian orphans.

This was initially denied by Mr Trump's team, but his lawyers later confirmed that he had in fact dictated his son's statement. Mueller was appointed to take over the probe after the firing.

Trump has said similar things about the June 2016 meeting.

"If I ask Donald a question, 'What time is it?' He would probably tell me how to build a clock", the lawyer explained. "We are fully confident of the accuracy and reliability of the information that has been provided by Donald Trump Jr.in the various investigations".

Sekulow also downplayed comments made by the president's other attorney, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who recently said that collusion is not a crime, calling them "rather unremarkable".
