SAFD sending crew to help battle deadly Carr Fire in California

North California wildfires expand to more than two-thirds the size of LA

"The Ranch Fire is still a very, very dynamic and active fire, but with the River Fire wrapping up, we've begun to move more aircraft over there and we are having some successes with that", said Blankenheim, explaining that one of Cal Fire's main priorities is to keep the bottom of the Ranch Fire from heading down the hill toward the communities of Lucerne, Nice and Clearlake Oaks in Lake County. The Complex has now grown to 273,664 acres with 30% containment, and CalFire has confirmed the destruction of 75 residences and 68 other structures - though this number should continue to climb as CalFire teams enter burned out areas to make a careful accounting of the situation.

The wildfires are "extremely fast, extremely aggressive, extremely unsafe", said Scott McLean, a deputy chief with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

The two fires burning a few miles apart and known as the Mendocino Complex have scorched 428 square miles (1,108 square kilometers) since igniting July 27 about 100 miles (161 kilometers) north of San Francisco, the state's firefighting agency said.

It wasn't immediately clear what California laws Trump was referring to.

Speaking to CNN, he said: "California does not divert water to the ocean".

More than 14,000 personnel from California and elsewhere in the country are fighting wildfires across the state.

"The big fires have scores of water-dropping helicopters getting water from nearby lakes and reservoirs", he said.

The president also called for clearing trees to stop the fires from spreading. WITCH FIRE (San Diego County), October 2007 Acres burned: 197,990 Structures destroyed: 1,650 Deaths: 2 9.

A 2016 study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that climate change was responsible for more than half of the documented increases in fuel aridity in western forests and had doubled the amount of land burned since 1984.

California has long had problems with fires during the summer but climate change has been blamed for the hotter weather and extremely dry vegetation which have aided them.

It has claimed more than 1,600 buildings, majority homes.

Overall, experts say Trump's Twitter remarks ignore two of the biggest factors in the wildfires: Climate change, which is likely exacerbating the droughts that lead to fires, and increased development near forests that makes the fires more unsafe to life and property.

The 200 troops, plus command and support staff, will get one day of classroom training from firefighters at JBLM this week and then two more days of field training once it's decided which of the 18 major wildfires burning across California they will be asked to help contain.

Last year's Thomas fire, which consumed 281,000 acres in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties, remains the state's largest on record.

More than 14,000 firefighters and hundreds of USA army personnel are trying to contain the more than a dozen major fires burning throughout the state.
