German couple jailed for selling son, 9, to paedophiles on dark web

In a case that shocked the country and raised serious questions about child protection services in Germany, the regional court in Freiburg sentenced the boy's mother, Berrin Taha, to 12-and-a-half years in prison.

Prosecutors had demanded a 12-year prison sentence.

A woman and her partner in southern Germany were on Tuesday (Aug 7) sentenced to jail for selling her young son to paedophiles on the darknet.

BBC reports that the woman, Christian L, 39, was sentenced to 12 years and six months, while her husband, the boy's stepfather, Berrin T, 48, was jailed 12 years.

The abuse was filmed and the crimes were carried out over a two-year period. The court ruled that after serving his sentence, the man must also remain in preventive custody. It said the mother was aware from the start of the man's pedophile tendencies and previous conviction.

They also admitted they had sexually abused their son, who was nine at the time.

The twisted pair and six others were part of a pedophile ring that was busted previous year following an anonymous tip.

A 33-year-old Spanish man who was offered the boy for sex by his mother was found guilty of repeatedly raping him.

In the following months, the court said, the woman organized assaults on a 2-year-old girl she occasionally looked after.

Video footage catalogued the horror of the boy's abuse, which included him being tied up and subjected to verbal humiliation.

Local authorities have been accused of failing to protect the boy, who now lives with a foster family.

The mother's partner was supposed to be banned from having contact with children following his earlier abuse conviction.

The case only came to light following an anonymous tip in September 2017.

As part of this morning's verdict, the couple were also ordered to pay €42,500 in compensation to the boy and another survivor of the abuse - a young girl.
