Geraint Hughes reflects on day two of Ben Stokes' trial

Ben Stokes has been described as "the main aggressor" in an incident that left a man with a fractured eye socket on the third day of his trial at Bristol Crown Court.

Stokes is standing trial at Bristol Crown Court accused of knocking out two other men outside a nightclub in the southwest English city in September a year ago.

Witness Mark Spure, an off-duty police community support officer (PCSO), said that after he left Mbargo nightclub he spotted "three to five" people involved in a "scuffle" on a nearby street. Earlier Det Con Daniel Adams, who led investigations for Avon and Somerset Police, said Barry, who Stokes is alleged to have mocked for being flamboyant, "makes a grab on Ryan Ali around the groin area" before violence flared.

PC Stacey Alway told the court that as she walked over to Mr. Stokes, she said: "A guy over there was covered in blood and I've been told you punched him".

The England cricketer knocked out Ryan Ali with one punch while the firefighter appeared to be backing away from a confrontation, a jury at Bristol crown court was told.

He identified Stokes to attending police officers, who arrested him.

Stokes, of Durham, Ali and Hale, both of Bristol, deny affray.

"As the group came to my attention, I heard some of what was being said", Stokes said in the written statement.

"It was homophobic in nature".

"He had a conversation with his friend and he said "300 get us in" and I still told them no". I took exception and said "leave it out" and "you shouldn't be taking the piss because they're gay".

The doorman said Hales asked what had happened and, after being told, said to his team-mate: "Stokesy - don't do that".

"I grappled with the second guy, in the course of that I can recall hitting him a few times".

"As I was on my own, when I separated two of them more people carried on behind me".

Cunningham claims Stokes started mimicking the voices and gestures of two gay nightclub patrons, Kai Barry and William O'Connor, in a derogatory manner.

"I got a little frightened so closed the window and went back to bed". I was concerned for myself and others.

Cricketer Ben Stokes claimed he was acting in self-defence of himself, England teammate Alex Hales and the two gay men.
