Emery ends Arsenal goalkeeper debate with Cech assurance

Petr Cech Faces A Battle With Bernd Leno For The No.1 Jersey At Arsenal

Unai Emery couldn't have asked for a tougher start to life as Arsenal manager as hot on the heels of defeat to Manchester City in his Premier League bow, the Gunners travel to Chelsea on Saturday.

The Gunners began their campaign with a 2-0 loss to champions Manchester City at the Emirates.

Emery's decision to not start £20 million new recruit Bernd Leno in goal was therefore even more of a surprise as Petr Cech kept his place.

"I am very happy with his performance".

"I think he has experience, quality, capacity like a first goalkeeper with us - and also Bernd Leno".

Leverkusen doubled down by then posting a video of Leno starting a quick attack that led to a goal for the club, with the line: "In case you all were wondering how to play out of the back".

Arsenal still have issues at left-back heading into the game, with Ainsley Maitland-Niles ruled out for up to eight weeks after fracturing his leg against Man City when filling in in that role. "I want consistency", said Emery on Thursday.

He told BetVictor: "A good professional performance from Maurizio Sarri's Chelsea at Huddersfield on the opening day although it was hard to get too excited about Arsenal who were easily brushed aside - as Chelsea were in the Community Shield a week earlier - by champions Manchester City at the Emirates".

While this game does come early in the season it could give an indicator as to which club is better equipped to regain a position in the top-four.

"This week Nacho Monreal is working every day, training every day with us", Emery said.

Emery is hopeful that the change will help to improve Arsenal's poor injury record and has set an aim to have above 90% player availability this season.

Many still believe that Nabil Fekir is a player that is needed on Merseyside and there have already been tentative suggestions that Klopp could make a move for him in January.
