NVIDIA Shows Off Quadro RTX Cards at SIGGRAPH 2018

NVIDIA Officially Announces Turing GPU Architecture at SIGGRAPH 2018

The new series of GPUs are specifically designed for ray tracing and intensive AI-based computation tasks.

Nvidia has officially unveiled the Quadro RTX family of graphics cards, powered by its next-generation Turing architecture, which it somewhat inaccurately describes as 'the world's first ray tracing GPU. All three cards support dual-GPU use with NVLink connectivity, effectively doubling the available memory.

For those unfamiliar, ray tracing is graphics rendering technique for creating more life-like light and shadows in a given scene. Deep learning on your ray-tracing to put it simply. Nvidia says the new generation of chips will give designers a chance to roll out those improvements real time, which could accelerate the inventive procedure and which Nvidia seeks customers will pay a premium for.

"Simulating reality requires incredible visual fidelity and processing power", Jason Paul, Nvidia's general manager of gaming and VR, said in a statement when the standard was announced.

Nvidia Turing will combine both its RT Cores and Tensor Cores to usher in a new form of hybrid rendering that includes both simulation and enhanced rasterization. Indeed, the new RT cores allow ray tracing to perform at 25x that of the company's previous Pascal architecture. Nvidia said that the new chipset contains an RT Core, and that the Quadro RTX is the world's first ray tracing GPU.

"Turing is Nvidia's most important innovation since we launched modern computer graphics almost two decades ago", said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of Nvidia, speaking at the start of the annual SIGGRAPH conference.

As PCWorld points out, a separate message thread seen just prior to the 2080 discussions hints that the card will leverage NVIDIA's new Turing GPU architecture. Also announced was the Quadro RTX Server, a reference architecture for highly configurable, on-demand rendering and virtual workstation solutions from the datacenter. "This will completely change how our artists work", said Michele Sciolette, chief technology officer, Cinesite. The demo ran on two Nvidia Quadro RTX cards, and Epic said the dynamic global illumination and ray-traced lighting technology that made it possible will be built into future releases of Unreal Engine 4. As usual, Nvidia will even offer a Quadro RTX Server with eight Turing GPUs wedged inside.

Nvidia said the RTX 8000 chips come with 48GB of memory and will go on sale at an "estimated street price" of $10,000. The technology firm also noted that its GPU nodes can outperform CPU nodes by 30 times when used for final-frame rendering for film effects.
