Shots fired at gate of US Embassy in Turkey; no one hurt

Six shots were fired at the U.S. embassy, the Ankara governor's office said, adding that three bullets hit the iron gate and window wall.

Turkey's economy, and its currency in particular, has been shaken by U.S. sanctions created to force the release of detained American pastor Andrew Brunson.

In a written statement before the Muslim feast of Eid al-Adha, Erdoğan said: "The attack aimed at our economy has no difference from an attack aimed at our call to prayer or flag".

"We can confirm a security incident took place at the US Embassy early this morning".

U.S. -Turkish tensions have dramatically increased in recent days over the fate of U.S. -born pastor Andrew Brunson, who has been held under house arrest in Istanbul for roughly two years on terrorism and espionage-related charges. "We have no reports of any injuries and we are investigating the details" embassy spokesman David Gainer said. It said one bullet hit a window but no one was hurt, and police were searching for the auto and suspects.

Ankara governor's office said six shots were fired from a moving white vehicle towards the embassy compound at 5:30 am (2:30 GMT).

The Turkish Police has launched an investigation into the attack and its perpetrators.

Police were dispatched after the shooting about 5am and were searching for the vehicle.

It added empty cartridges were found at the scene.

In a Twitter post, Ibrahim Kalın said: "We condemn the attack on the USA embassy".

Meanwhile, the Turkish foreign ministry said measures were taken to "ensure the security of the USA embassy in Ankara, other United States missions and their personnel" across the country.
