Doctors warn not to vacuum while wildfire smoke is in the air

Wildfire smoke blankets downtown Vancouver on Monday morning

Air quality is forecast to be unhealthy around the region on Sunday and officials with the district warned that if the smell of smoke is present, Bay Area residents should stay inside if possible.

Air quality in Spokane has tipped into the "very unhealthy" range, and regional air quality monitors caution anyone, regardless of health, from exerting themselves out of doors.

Check the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency's website for the most recent conditions. Until then, air quality levels can be expected to oscillate between unhealthy and moderate. At least 16 flights at Kelowna International Airport were cancelled or delayed on Sunday, while cancellations were also reported at airports in Penticton and Castlegar.

Changes in wind direction have brought over more smoke to the area from wildfires around northern and central Washington, as well as from British Columbia.

For everyone else, Ries says the risk of being outdoors in not necessarily that high, "although if you have a choice to postpone strenuous exercise, or not go for that 20 kilometre outdoor run today, that might be a good idea".

It's been a week since Metro Vancouver issued an air quality advisory and, according to CBC meteorologist Johanna Wagstaffe, the smoke will likely remain thick for the next couple of days on the South Coast.

Wildfire smoke originating in Canada is now clouding the skies over central and northeast Minnesota.

"From one corner of the province to the other, we've got major fires of note burning right now", Kevin Skrepnek of the BC Wildfire Service told CTV Vancouver.

The north end of Vancouver Island is covered by the advisory as well.
