Paris attack: Knifeman kills his mother and sister in stabbing rampage

Police at the scene of a knife attack in the suburb of Trappes west of Paris

Two people were killed and another seriously injured in a knife attack in Paris this morning.

PARIS-A man on a French watch list of radicals stabbed his sister and mother to death Thursday in an assault that Islamic State claimed.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to give such details publicly.

A total of 230 people have been killed in the past three years, with most attacks carried out by French or other European nationals inspired by the Islamic State.

A security source said the attacker was known to "apologise" for terrorism, adding: "Since 2016 he has been noted for his support for terrorist acts but this does not mean today's attack was motivated by terrorism".

Earlier, media reports said the attacker had used a knife on his victims before being shot by police.

The motive for the violence remains unclear, but the Islamic State group claimed the attack via its propaganda channel.

The Versailles public prosecutor, however, said in a statement late Thursday that the assailant had shouted "Allahu Akbar" (God is Greatest) and threatened police before he was shot.

High-rise apartment blocks in Trappes remained sealed off by police on Thursday afternoon.

"He was known (to police) for advocating terrorism but it seems he was a disturbed person rather than someone who could respond to calls for action from terrorist organizations like ISIS", he said, using the Arabic acronym for Islamic State.

The attack came just hours after Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi issued his first message in nearly a year to mark the Islamic Eid al-Adha holiday and encouraged his followers to carry out lone-wolf attacks in Europe and North America, and "stab their bodies".

Trappes is an underprivileged town situated in an overall wealthy area west of Paris.

Collomb tweeted: "My first thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones".

Authorities urged residents to avoid the area around Rue Camille Claudel while a police operation was underway.
