Liverpool's best & worst case scenarios for Champions League draw

Lionel Messi

With Benfica securing an impressive 5-2 aggregate win over PAOK, they joined the likes of Borussia Dortmund and AS Roma in pot two at the expense of the Reds.

However, amendment of new UEFA regulations saw 26 teams attain direct qualification to the group stage this time around; this includes the top four sides of the top four leagues in Europe.

Liverpool are facing a potential group of death in the Champions League group stage draw. Had the Greek side progressed, Liverpool would have been assigned to a more favourable place in pot two of the draw.

Holders Real, Europa League holders Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain and Lokomotiv Moscow complete Pot 1.

Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool will be in pot three alongside Schalke, Lyon, Monaco, Ajax, CSKA Moscow, Valencia and PSV Eindhoven.

Red Star, the 1991 champions, left it late as they emerged by the skin of their teeth, coming from two goals down to draw 2-2 at RB Salzburg and advance on away goals after a goalless home encounter.

Pot four: Viktoria Plzen, Club Brugge, Galatasaray, Young Boys, Inter, Hoffenheim, AEK Athens, Red Star Belgrade. The Champions League final takes place on Saturday 1 June, at Atletico Madrid's Wanda Metropolitano stadium. Group three contains some possibly tricky opponents but Dortmund will be happy to face Ajax.

The Anfield outfit made it all the way to the final last season only to be beaten 3-1 by Real Madrid in Kiev.

Liverpool's fate in the draw will be largely determined by the result of the play-off encounter between PAOK and Benfica on Wednesday.

Liverpool could face a more hard Champions League group in Thursday's draw after Benfica secured their place in Pot 2 on Wednesday night.
